It'll definately go loud enough with most IEMs and cans but amping makes it noticeably better in every way especially with cans

If I install one of the mods like 1.3.3. or 1.3.4 can you just go back to 1.5.0 by putting the firmware back in the player and updating the firmware. Some people said that with DOC2008's customs it wasn't straightforward going back to Ibasso firmware and you had to use the Rkbatch tool.

Yeah it's just a matter of putting the official .img file on and updating the firmware as normal.

The only time it's different is if you've put Rockbox on as you need to restore the original Recovery back to be able to put official firmware back on.

I've finally found a pairing for my DX50 which will stay permanently tied too as a rig. Using DX50's line out to JDS C421 and a pair of SHR840 I'm now quite content with the sound. (firmware v1.2.8). Now I can leave the player alone and be happy.

Never happen.  You'll be trying something else shortly.  Though I agree that the JDS pairs really well with the DX50 (I use the C5, which is the newer version of the C421).  I just replaced the 1.5.0 firmware for the SU 1.3.3 fw and am loving it.  I give you about a week and you'll be posting about a new synergy you love.  And that is how it should be.

Well, I was considering JDS C5 at one point but I just don't know atm. I've been playing with other gear but the DX50 rig is quite satisfying. Maybe you should consider an optional full-size headphone for home use? Your DX50 / C5 rig is quite capable, an extra edition for lounge chair listening may be welcome?

Shure SHR840 is a wonderful headphone.

"Shure SHR840 is a wonderful headphone"

I'm shure it is.  :)

I don't listen in the house.  Got a wife and kid and that won't work.  :)

Walking, car, and sometimes the classroom (though my students will whine if I do that).

I don't know if the C5 would be that much of an improvement for you to make it worthwhile.  I think they both are pretty good amps.

I really like the DX50, it suits my purposes.  I was really happy with the 1.5.0, then got curious about the SU 1.3.3 (hadn't liked earlier version and other custom firmwares) and so far I really like it.  FLAC at 312, it just makes the sound clearer, nothing seems boosted or tweaked artificially.

Using my Dunu1000s right now, I sent my Altones back to be checked.  They seemed to vary from use to use, so I thought I'd have the factory check them out.

What a shame, all that C5 power on tap and nowhere to use it. :p

The firmware decisions for DX50 were (are) getting a little out of hand imo, they remind me of a box of chocolates, too many at once spoil the party. Though I'm sure people disagree.

I agree, lots of firmware choices.  I liked 1.2.8 a lot, I found 1.5.0 even better (more timbre) and I'm liking the SU 1.3.3 right now because it is just a cleaner version of 1.5.0.  The others I tried all sounded boosted or veiled in certain frequency areas.

olddude, did You also try FLAC mode with irr OFF and CPU performance @ default? Depends on the IEM`s/cans though but it makes soundstage nicely deep (towards front/middle) and everything is more airy and dynamical/natural compared with irr ON and CPU @ 312. Oh, and don`t forget to turn DX50 to mid gain. I know that You probably prefer more "intimate" and neutral presentation but anyway, give it a try
1) FLAC-only + irr OFF + CPU performance default --- more depth towards front/middle and vocals for example more out of headstage.
More airy soundstage/imaging and more dynamics.

2) FLAC-only + irr ON + CPU 312kHz --- closer, more intimate and clearer imaging with little more separation in width.

At least that`s what I hear with my ears

I'm using Flac/irr/312.  No gain because I'm using an amp and gain doesn't work with LO.  I have my amp set to low gain/no bass boost, and my Dunus set to the green rings (2nd least bass setting  possible).  I don't need more "deep" since I'm using the Dunus.  Maybe when I get my Altones back I'll try #1 and see how that sounds.

Hmmm....can you point me in the right direction for downloading su 1.3.3?  Danced around a bit but not sure if I have the right one.  cheers.
