For me Rockbox has the best sound of any of the firmwares I have tried.

Until somebody does A/B comparison to rockbox with two DX50 units, I would leave this open. I personally liked SU 1.3.3 more and simplicity of UI/functions are also better on Mango imo.

hi guys,
I am not an Audiophile.I am planning to buy a dap,my budget is $250.So my options are dx50 and upcoming X3 second gen.I currently own a Cowon C2 for 3 years which i like a lot especially their jet effects to enjoy my music with my(Fiio e6,Senn HD215,439,203,Sony mdr xb90ex,Panasonic rp hje450,AT ck505m) mostly i use 203,xb90 and hje450.Can these DAPs provide  a significant sound improvement over my Cowon.I usually play 320kbps mp3.My cowon is still working perfectly but i need an upgrade. My gut feeling is with dx50. But X3 is available in my country(India) but i need to import dx50 through mp4nation.I am new to this forum. Can you guys help me

Why You need upgrade? In Your situation and gear/file format preferences I would just keep using Cowon.

The short answer is not really. The improvement won't be significant using your current IEMs and headphones. You'll notice some improvement in detail, clarity but in your situation the earphones / headphones will get to a level the player cannot extract anymore from them. The most improovment for you will come from an IEM / Headphone upgrade. This isn't to say you won't hear 'some' improvement with DX50, but 'significant', no.

The way sound quality works is the entire chain must be strong and work together, a general rule here is the greatest improvement will come from headphone upgrades, the source is less effective. This is because headphones and IEMs have scaling ablity which is generally related to their performance or 'ceiling level'.

I can plug my $700 ASG-2 into DX50 and gain excellent results far better than any Cowon because the IEM has a high scaling ability, the DAP can take them to higher levels. On the other hand, if I plug my $50 Phillips into DX50 the IEM will only go so far and much of the DAPs performance is left hidden or unused due to the headphones limitations.

Thank u guys for the reply. If that is the case then i will first buy a good pair of cans.My cowon is working well and i like their sound very well but it is full of scratches and now looks ugly, that is why i decided to buy a new one.I first searched for new cowon models but the lowest priced one(some M2 if i recall) is above 200 dollars here, that is why i preferred dx50 and x3. For the same price i think these will fare better than cowon. If cowon produce a DAP as poweful as these DAPs with same spec i will definitely pay 100 more for their jet effect.

Friends if i decide to buy one of these DAP,which cans should i buy to do justice to them. There are not many audiophile shops here and most of them are specialised in speakers not headphones.I saw a new beyerdynamic DT150 for USD200 in one shop,is that a good choice?or akg k240 for USD130. Which one should i choose

Definitely not AKG K240 imo. DT150 should be good but they both are more for studio monitoring rather enjoying music.
And sorry if it is dumb question but what is jet effect?

Sounds like some useless effect that is ruining true music SQ.

Jet audio(BBE,mach3bass,stereo enhance,MP enhance)is a audio enhancement available in all of their players including their newly launched USD1200 Dap Plenue P1.It is not a useless audio enhancement feature like SRS or WAVE audio, infact jet audio was the reason cowon became famous in audo world.I think most cowon customers will also agree with that.
And if k240 and DT150 are for studio purpose then which one is suitable for dx50 and X3II? ATH M50x,DT770 available online here and and almost all Senn, jbl, sony, akg, harman kardon, panasonic,Denon,Beats models are available in local stores here. Most people here not heard about brands like Grado,Hifiman,Audeze,UE,Vmoda etc,and price is comparitively high here, you guys are lucky.

I was big user of Jet Effects when I was into Cowons. You'll find once you move up the food chain of headphone performance the effects (especially BBE) are less required, they will colour the sound in unwanted ways. The true way or "audiophille" way is to listen flat and cater the headphone signature to your needs.

As for some headphone options take a look at the Shure line up. Headphones like:

Shure SRH440
Shure SRH840

Even Grado SR80 or SR125.

Do some research on the Shure models, they're great, detailed sounding headphones. And you can give them a nudge with some Jet Effects. Personally I don't know of a more detailed headphone at $100 than SRH440.

If someone is looking for a leather case maybe this would be a option.

I found on ebay old iRiver H320 leather cases in good shape (no really used ones) and they match perfect with the size of the DX50 (only the Line-Out jack is not reachable, but all other jacks/buttons are fine):

This is is big enough to fit with a full size SD card + micro SD to full size SD card adapter:

hey guys,

How do I connect my ailing DX50 (as pure transport) to the to be released ALO continental dual mono (as dac/amp)? Should I use the coax out? AFAIK, the ALO has 3.5 SE/BAL and USB inputs.

I just really like the face buttons of the DX line so no upgrades for me. All music, shuffle mode all the way!

Thanks for pics! Was thinking about buying it but thought it was more "grey" in combination. Won`t fit for my taste, like black more. But nice anyway

Its for a couple of reasons.

My DX50 is a getting along now age wise, why not give it a fresh look.

I thought it would sit well with my ASG-2 blue coloured cable.

My black silicon stock case had begun to tear on the top left corner.

Now I can pick apart my DX90 and DX50.

Before colour coding them the only real way I could tell is by looking at DX90's upgraded jacks (which look a little different.
