The FiiO X3 2nd gen (ex X3K, X3II) Thread : 192K/24B, CS4398,Native DSD, USB DAC with LO and inline remote

I'd like to check out something, before I go into the problem.
I see all of you having otg running and be happy with that.
The plan is to get the very cable and input usb stick. I recall
I had to go here and there to format micro sd card, since my
operating system did not see it. I assume the same might hap-
pen. Would someone say what form might look like, if I leave
sd card in the player? Would I be asked what to format and
choose the device? Formatting over sd card is the nightmare
I don't want.
Best regards all.

If I understood you correct...

I think the only option is to format the card in the player. I just formatted mine last week, but I didn't have a USB otg connected at the time.

I already formatted sd card. Thanks.
I was talking about usb stick, connected to otg cable. There might
be a form to choose between card and stick. Or not. That was the
question.
Best regards.

You cannot format the OTG storage with the X3II to my knowledge, nor have I tried.  I would recommend using something already formatted in FAT32 or format your OTG to FAT32.  If you can't do it from your desktop, then you will need a 3rd party program that will allow you to format your OTG to FAT32.  Hope this helps.

ETA:  The X3II does show the micro SD and the OTG as separate things when you are using the folder menu an you have to choose one or the other depending on what you are doing.

OTG should only have to be FAT32 to be read as it's an external file source, Windows and Linux will do this. Can't vouch for Mac.

If I could, I've been curious about this myself. I have tens of hard drives laying around all 1TB or greater, however most of the modern drives don't have a direct plug-in for power. Will these work via OTG, haven't tested it as I need an OTG cable lol.

Otg is merely a data link rather than a hub. Therefore any power will be drained from the connecting device. So in short, if the dap gives out no extra power then it may not work AFAIK.

I stand corrected as Amazon sell hubs although i don 't know how effective they are.

Wow, this thread has become exceptionally academic, and equally interesting.

Anyway, I have a noob question for the group. I'm considering using this as a portable DAC/amp on my Android HTC One m8 and Windows PC to stream Tidal. Can anyone compare how the X3ii sounds as a DAC vs the Oppo HA-2?

I'll be using this mostly with a Dunu DN-1000, but occasionally with my AKG K7XX.

Thanks!

Ive been using the X3II with my Sony Z7 since Friday and its sounded good but I just went to hook up my little C&C BH portable amp through the lineout and holy crap did it just open up the sound so much more. I can't believe how much better it sound with just the onboard DAC and the portable amp compared to the amp circuitry on the X3. I'm going to let my Schiit Vali warm up and see how that sounds.

I'm not actually sure if the X3ii can be used as a DAC/amp for the HTC One M8 specifically. I just tried it on several Android phones, and the X3ii working as a DAC/amp combo was hit-or-miss. Specifically, I tried it on an HTC One M7 upgraded to Android 5.0 Lollipop and that didn't work, while the USB DAC functionality did work on a Xperia Z Ultra upgraded to Android 5.0.

I just tried this with my Samsung Galaxy S3. It did indeed work with the help of USB Audio Pro app on the Playstore.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.extreamsd.usbaudioplayerpro (its not free, however there is a trail version for testing purposes)

It worked without a problem using X3II as a DAC. The only downside was X3II wanted to charge whilst connected, I assume drawing the phones battery.
