@Brooko you said the DAC function worked OOTB, can you still confirm that? Is it just my unit? Is this a firmware issue (I reinstalled FW 1.0)?
 

 
Hi - just rechecked with my netbook
 
Kubuntu - with 3.16.0-31-generic
 
Works OOTB. Doesn't show the Fiio vol control in kmix, but gives me the message that it has defaulted to it, and definitely sound coming via the X3ii.
 
About to upgrade to -34 (haven't used the netbook for a while), so will recheck.

I keep them (my playlists) in the root directory
 
You could however add the full drive path, and then put them all in a folder (/playlists) instead - that way they're all together and out of the way

That's how I use my playlists on my 1st gen. Works well, the only issue is keeping the drive letters sorted out (int. / sd). Not an issue with the new x3 tho

How do you actually create the M3U file, though? Is this a text file that I create with paths?

Yep - or use a media player like Foobar, and then edit the paths later to suit.

Depending on the media player used (musicbee in my case), you may be able to select absolute or relative paths. That should avoid having to use an editor afterwards.

Just tested playlists with Mediamonkey.  I took a few songs that were just in my "Music" listing and added them to a newly created playlist, I then selected the X3 drive that shows up when connected and checked the box to sync the playlist I just created.
 
What it does, is just create a /playlist dir on your card and a m3u file inside it.   It does not add it to the playlist menu/icon on the X3 though, that still says no playlist files found.   I'm not sure how you would add anything to that.

im on ubuntu 14.04.2 w/ 3.16.0-34-generic kernel. how can this be? im also on pulseaudio 4.0. correct me if i'm wrong, but we've just narrowed down that it's NOT a kernel issue... i opened up a thread on the ubuntuforums.org forum but so far no real reports. if anyone feels like checking up on the thread here it is: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2274844&p=13270337#post13270337 if anyone wants to submit their syslog and/or dmesg output there, we might be able to get to the bottom of this faster... it looks as though it may be distro-specific.

Based off the 1st gen. the playlist feature is for x3 created playlists only. If you're going to use playlists created with a media player, then you'll need to load the m3u file using browser mode. Don't know if Fiio is planning to change this, hopefully at least they'll let us change the playlist name.

so it turns out after a LOT of googling, that this issue is similar to the first-gen X3 on linux. here's what i did (i dont remember the order):
 
*i stuck a mechanical pencil in the reset button, then i factory resetted the DAP through options, turned off the idle off and sleep options on the DAP, and set usb mode to DAC (all done while unplugged from the computer)
*shut down the computer
*plugged in DAP
*turned on computer (everything booted fine no problem, could get passed login screen and everything
*went under pulseaudio sound settings and all my devices were listed
*went into deadbeef and enabled alsa passthrough w/ no resampling "direct hardware FiiO X3 no conversions"
*hit play
*??????
*profit!
 
it should work for you @felixgrill. i wish i didnt have to deal with this crap, but in the end it did work. i hope this helps any other linux users that run into issues. ITS DOABLE!

If you definitely think it's a faulty player - and it certainly sounds like it - send it back. A replacement unit should confirm that for you. (You'd surely be extremely unlucky to receive two players with the same fault).

I should have read some of the messages more carefully as I see it was a Linux issue. Glad it's been resolved.
