I will pick up "Years Of Decay" and slowly add more... This 'exploration' will not end soon.

One thing that made me fall in love with this album was the production.  It is very tight sounding, with an incredible guitar sound with unbelievable amounts of low end.  This album sounded like "Pantera" before pantera did!  the drums, bass and guitars have the most cohesive synergy I've ever heard in a metal album.

So I was looking through my albums looking for stuff I haven't listen to in awhile.

And I came across a progressive gem that I had forgotten about.

Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War Of The Worlds.

Anyone ever hear this album?

Machine Head - Burn My Eyes (Underappreciated metal album)
Machine Head - The Burning Red (More melodic and variety)
Pantera - The Great Southern Trendkill (When I like to sit back and relax)
Mudvayne - L.D. 50 (Very technical yet simple style record)

I know it's not the best list, but I grew up on these records so they are all really special to me.

??? you must frequent different circles than I do.  Burn My Eyes is considered a classic by most metal heads!

I didn't say under-rated, I said under appreciated. Machine Head have never gotten the praise they deserve. They bridged the gap between Pantera and Slayer in an awesome record. Then, of course, Roadrunner wanted to make quick cash so they told Machine Head to make more "accessible" albums. The Burning Red is melodic but it is still very good. Supercharger, on the other hand, is over produced and just not a very good listening.

Burn My Eyes and The Blackening are alike. They get praise all the time, including many "best of all time" lists, but when people lists the top metal bands, Machine Head is never there.

I guess so and if not I have read the name numerous times on another website.

Right now King Crimson's album "Larks' Tongues In Aspic" is just playing. I tried to listen to it last night but somehow I blacked out. Now as much as I have gotten used to 'progressive music' I am still caught of guard by the first track of this album. I first listened to "Islands" to get a feel for eventual transitions. "Islands" is a grower, I call it the more quiet King Crimson in that regard. Back to listening.

Half past three P.M. update: "Larks' Tongues In Aspic" is too my liking and I find it more bassy/groovy with a fusion of violins and the acoustic guitar. "Larks' In Tongues Aspic, Part Two" is really remarkable: heavy grooving, distortion and more grooving with an almost funky sound sometimes without losing its 'progressive edge' while even metal heaviness shines through accompagnied by a jarring violin and more... This track is something else from what I have heard before. I am even more surprised by "Larks' Tongues In Aspic, Part One" finding the words to describe that piece of music is almost impossible. King Crimson...

Overkill's "Years Of Decay" is in. Captain Beefhart & His Magic Band's "Trout Mask Replica" is now playing. Only a few albums have given me the feeling of really hearing something different, this is now one of them.

"Trout Mask Replica" ... I know it us supposed to be a great album, but I never managed to like or appreciate it. I give it a spin every now and then, but it has never worked for me sadly.

Hmm ... maybe I should try some Overkill ...

I don't know if this albums have been listed but I think they maybe worth your while:

Gorguts - Obscura (death metal)
Cephalic Carnage - Conforming to Abnormality (grind or "hydro grind as the band likes to call it
biggrin.gif
)
Testament - Practice What You Preach (Thrash)

each are good examples of what different subgenres were developing into at the time

once thing about Blitz's voice, it has changed over the years.  It used to be a bit more nasally but isn't so much now.  I think his best vocal performance is on "From the Underground and Below"

From the Underground and Below is a great Overkill album one of their best.
Thrash really don't have many good voices around.
But I think Blitz has the most likeable voice of thrash bands.
There is a few Overkill songs where Blitz shows he can have a nice voice but I think the voice he usually uses just goes with the music and something he can do live night after night.

Speaking of voices in metal and thrash not exactly having the best.
I really like Oderus of GWAR a lot they have become a sort of a thrash band in the last decade.

And a voice like this although not actually a thrash band but a bit thrashy song is nice sometimes.

If you got the voice to go from the classic high pitch but also have a roughness (second and third song) to it yet also sound unique I just love it like this Andi Deris of Helloween 1994-now.

Testament - Practice What You Preach (Thrash)

Ehh maybe if your hardcore in love with 80's thrash but there is potential for a person to get burned out though.
If there is one must have Testament album I think it has to be "The Gathering"
That album is insanely good.
The only downfall for some might be the few songs with sort of death metal vocals.
I really don't care for vocals like that but with this album its perfectly fine and doesn't bother me at all.

I say try listening to some 30 second samples on amazon or something.
Not really the greatest thing but sometimes it kinda gives you a good taste but sometimes you just still don't know.
Or youtube is sometimes good but usually most of the stuff on there has horrible SQ.
I've bought a lot of albums with just 30 second samples from amazon.
