The diary entries of a little girl in her 30s! ~ Part 2

While there are indeed some wise folk on this thread I think this thread is popular partly because the regular posters here are somewhat tired or wary of talking about any piece of gear being 'the best'...

I see, that makes sense, so they are all novel pieces of sound in different ways around here?  Hmph!

"irrefutably"???? hahahahahahahaha!!

Is what I hear as the "best" the same as what you hear as the "best"? Is "best" an objective metric or a subjective judgement?

Clearly it's both, there are two kinds of "best".  There is the best car "my favorite looking / feeling car", and the fastest car which wins the most races, irrefutably!!!

Maybe I'm just not paying as much attention as I should but what exactly is your angle here?

The most drag races? The most circuit races? The most drift races?

Would you take the veyron to compete in a drift competition? I also think mclaren could outrun the veyron on those long twisting roads high in the mountains.

Like I said earlier, the higher you go the more specialized they become.

I also have window alarms that sound of at 120 db when triggered. I feel safer already.

You forgot to include pics of the two bloodthirsty dobermans and the canisters of nerve gas.

Well, the car/race analogy may be both better and worse than you think here, because, while it's true that there is a certain level of objective measurements that makes a car the fastest one on the track, it still requires an extremely talented driver and weather conditions (and other conditions as well) to perform to the fullest. While a certain headphone may indeed be better than another, objectively speaking and striving for a flat response, it will require someone to appreciate that and for that someone to know which amp/source to pair it with for it to perform to the fullest. That isn't to say that we should or shouldn't choose a fully subjective, or objective, way to determine what we find is the best headphone out there, but that we should be aware of the caveats of going either direction. In the end this inevitably boils down to a discussion about subjective (for me defined by going after taste) versus objective (for me defined by measurements) which has been overdone at this point. You are welcome to provide your thoughts, opinions and questions - but don't be discouraged if you find that most of us in this particular thread are, as a_recording put it so well, a bit tired of the whole debate of which headphone is "the best" and so on. Between you and me, this is more of a lounge to calmly (and sometimes not so calmly) discuss our opinions on many matters - even outside the spectrum of audio equipment.

As for the lithium question, it's because of bipolar disorder. I do sometimes talk about it in here, because while I recognize it being somewhat a debbie downer subject to talk about, I still feel like I trust most regulars here enough to sometimes, every other month, open up myself about it to vent for a few minutes, and then go on with the other topics at hand. There's not really a story to be told here. If you have further questions about it, you not only could, but you should ask them over PM. Also, this thread isn't my own personal therapy session and we all - perhaps me in particular - need to respect that.

I had to take this shot at ISO 3200 because it was super dark and I was on an escalator, and after denoising, it was significantly softer than before, but it's one of my prouder pictures, even though it's not tack sharp and the colors are a bit blunted.

IIRC you posted this photo some time ago or linked to it. Congrats, it's an awesome shot!

Regarding the camera talk:

1. The RX100II looks fantastic point and shoot BUT
2. The Ricoh GR looks zomg amazing and a real photographers tool, especially for random snapshots and street photography.

Quite interesting Ricoh GR vs RX100 (current model) discussion on dpreview:

Personal preference I know, but for me the hinged LCD of the RX100 II would be a big plus. After more than 5 years, I'm still looking for a worthy successor to my much loved Canon TX1, a small inconspicuous cam with good range and hinged LCD, to take stealthy photos like this one:

If a camera can get that high with usable results, it can be extremely liberating. In this set and this one, there are shots that went that high, and higher. It's hard to tell from the photos (because of how high the ISO was in some of those shots) just how little light there was to work with. Below a certain level of darkness, my camera's dozens of focus points become increasingly useless, except the center focus point that just continues to focus at crazy low light levels I can barely see in.

Hey Jude (NPI), I can see why, great pics. I'm just never able to get results without unacceptable amounts of noise, above 3200. Of course, my Nikon digital is an antique by modern standards, and I've not shopped anything new because I've been lazy and typically use my phone. My wife is a shutterbug and uses a Leica X2 and she loves it, but I think it has a max ISO of 800. Takes amazing pics, though. Maybe I'll check out one of their bigger models at the local shop soon (hers feels like a toy in my hands because it's so small).

Umm, no. Cornering speed, straightline speed, speed off the mark, speed from 40-120, speed from 60-200, top speed... the list goes on. e.g., the Bugatti Veyron GV is the fastest production car for top speed, but the Koenigsegg Agera R spanks it to 200MPH. Both of which get crushed by the much less expensive McLaren MP4-12C, on a road course when you add some corners. There are some you can live with every day, and others you can't, due to factors such as comfort and size (much like with headphones). And as for looks, that's entirely subjective. There's no such thing as "irrefutably", due to too many factors at play, and that applies to just about everything.

Thanks. Probably in the Photography Thread?

To me, the TX1 has always given off a creepy porno auteur vibe to it for some reason...

However, speaking of old Canons, I've long been in the hunt for a Pro1, the only Powershot model to sport an L lens...

I love the MP. It's big, heavy, and has to be manual everything. Manual film winding, manual metering, etc. If I ever bought a Leica, it'd be that one. But it's not very practical. The new M is amazing, though.

Ok, well... it seems like "best" invokes some negative feelings in this part of the woods, I like the word best, who doesn't want to invest in the best?  What if I change my question to "favourite" then?

The FitEar Parterre looks nice.  Favourite?
