Try them all, it will fully depend on the fw you use, your headphones and your sound preferences. I was on J fir a long time, then moved to E for some months and I’m now on MX3
My single ended output is fully burned in. I have to say, with the right headphones, it shines. I am actually enjoying my AKG K812 headphones from single ended output as much as the Shure SRH1540 from balanced output. Amazing. The magic of the Sony's DSEE and S-Master is magic. Power is overrated, if you match the right, quality headphones.
I like E with FEv2. J is too polite, no special sauce same as all the regions J is simply tuned the local taste. MX3 has a great low end, dips in the mid's and can push the highs for some. E is a very lively region with a touch of reverb & delay, presents a strong presence without being wearing on burnt in DAP's. Given it's geographic coverage makes sense E works well for those that listen to mixed genres.
just picked this up from classifieds with a dignis case for basically 50% off! so excited. only had 35 hours on it! I slapped on a screen protector and am starting to burn it in. I want to get acquainted with 3.02 first then will very likely throw Midnight v2 on it. Midnight v2 made my A55 sound incredible, maybe even as good or better than my ZX507, which made me want to lock down a WM1A before they're gone for good.

I guess ignorance is bliss because I love my 1A stock. To me, it is absolutely amazing. I just love it. This is why I bought a second brand new one. I am slowly upgrading all my songs to hi-res. Little by little. I only have so much money.
The WM1A/Z does have an dynamic range around 100db, so barely enough for CD quality. I don't think that you have to get into the hassle in replacing with Hi-Res Audio. Just go with Audio CD quality, that should be fine.
You would need at least the TA-ZH1ES (or a different DAP which, of course, would have a different sound signature) to make use of Hi-Res audio (on paper. If it is possible to make any use of it in the real world is debatable but we better don't open that can)
The only advantage is, when the mix/master is different. That is rare, but can happen.

On my 1Z I’ve downconverted all my hires music to 16/44 or 16/48 to be able to fit my entire library and it sounds brilliant to me. The hires versions sit on my Auralic Aries Mini in the home TA rig

Holy moly. My collection consists of ~3300 tracks and i already have the feeling that this is way more than what i really listen to.
Thats around 4580 Albums... holy moly. Depending on your age, just assume you're 36 and started collecting with 18, that is more than 250 albums per year, so more than 20 albums per month.

It’s about 3.500 albums but probably near 5.000 individual cd’s as there are a lot of multi cd albums (a lot of classical and opera), about 2.500 cd albums, about 100 ripped lp’s and the rest digital downloads. I’m 59 and have been buying cd’s almost since they started coming out so for 35-40 years. I still buy a fair number of second hand cd’s and rip.
The 7th of May 1946 Sony was started, in 2016 they were 70 years old. The Signature Series was designed to commemorate the event. They spent years developing the whole line. So in a way they made their statement; the 1A and 1Z sound totally unique! Actually the sound is not for everyone, as it’s not supposed to be. They are attempting to be the best that they can as showing their “signature sound” and it’s maybe different? The 1A and 1Z models may by reintroduced, but they already made their statement. They said what they wanted to say.
Two cards, more power and faster start-up would be nice, but not necessary for me to buy another one.
I have WM1Z and DMP-Z1, I can’t find reason to buy another DAP as far as they still perform. I planned to ask Sony Services Center to replace the battery of WM1Z next year which will hit 6,000 hours. I may buy a new WM1A as it is now just cost $800 which is bargin.
