I’ve just received the IER-Z1Rs this afternoon and first impressions are that it is in a different league than the Rai Penta. The RPs are definitely more comfortable but the soundstage and imaging is very much forward and inside the head. The fit of the RPs is svelte and comfortable, and easy to fit with a quick twist in the little “thumb“ indent of the body. The first impression from the Z1Rs is that the soundstage and imaging are very close to a real “speakers in the room” stereo, with wide sound field and very precise imaging of the instruments not only from left to right but front to back. However they are a lot less comfortable than the RPs. I am using the large triple comfort tips and I still feel like I can hear too much outside when music isn’t playing. They also feel like they are hanging out of my ears versus the RPs which have a svelte, close fit.
Finally it’s worth mentioning that the Rai Pentas seem to be more sensitive than the Z1Rs… I was listening to the WM-1Z in low gain mode at about 70 on volume, but really needed to put on high gain at about 90 on the volume to get the same immersive feel to the sound as with the Rai Pentas.
Anyway I’ve only listened for about an hour but I can tell already the Z1Rs definitely DO take the WM-1Z to another level not possible with the Rai Pentas. I’m going to leave everything playing for about 48 hours and keep checking in on the sound. I can tell the fit will take some getting used to but fidelity-wise they are miles beyond the Meze, at least with the WM-1Z.
