I wouldn't say it's a joke. She has a very talent among women. Most people don't understand how hard it is to actually do that. It takes a ton of vocal training, just like conventional singing.
Sorry but I have to agree with GreatDane...I don't find anything good about that. I love a lot of different kinds of metal, but give me any of the good female-fronted goth-metal bands over that any day of the week. Even non-metal lovers would have to respect the singing of someone like Tarja Turunen. But she really sings. That kind of screeching, while I am sure it is interesting to some, and can undoubtedly be emotionally evocative to some, does not constitute good singing, IMHO.
And finally, the rarest of rare: Deirbhile Ni Bhrolchain. AFAIK she's only recorded one album ("Smaointe").
I don't understand a single word of it, yet still it strikes a chord with me and gives me goosebumps every time I put it on.
