I wouldn't say it's a joke. She has a very talent rare among women. Most people don't understand how hard it is to actually do that. It takes a ton of vocal training, just like conventional singing.

Sorry but I have to agree with GreatDane...I don't find anything good about that.  I love a lot of different kinds of metal, but give me any of the good female-fronted goth-metal bands over that any day of the week. Even non-metal lovers would have to respect the singing of someone like Tarja Turunen.  But she really sings.  That kind of screeching, while I am sure it is interesting to some, and can undoubtedly be emotionally evocative to some, does not constitute good singing, IMHO.

Tarja is my favorite female vocalist of all time (as stated earlier in the thread). Angels isn't way up on my list or anything, but I see how people could have a lot of respect for what she does. It's a very rare find to see a band like this fronted by a woman.

While I agree that she may not belong in this thread, she's far from 'a joke'.

Maybe it's just a generational thing. I come from the classic metal tradition, being an old fart. I grew up with people like Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson, who had multi-octave vocal ranges, and used them. Female metal Singers like Tarja are very much from that tradition.

While I do not consider AC/DC a metal band, it was nonetheless Brian Johnson's 100% screeched vocals from Back in Black (an album I, along with 50 million or so other people, love) that saw the dawn of the completely screamed vocal. Johnson had a controlled, almost bluesy screech, but it was all screech. That's evolved over the last 30 years into a variety of screeching and screaming metal vocals. I don't debate that these have artistic merit - that's in the ear of the listener to decide. And they may even be very difficult to do, sure. But I still don't consider it "singing". It's something else.

I hated male "cookie monster" metal vocals until I learned that these were really a vocal effect, and were not in any way something someone could do naturally. Somehow I started to appreciate them a little more after that, although I still don't really want a whole song of it. But used as a foil to offset beautiful operatic female singing, it works for me.

Some lesser known, but highly recommended female singers...

Let's start with the most "popular" one: Martha Wainwright. I simply love that voice!

She has an unbelievable vocal range, yet (almost) nobody knows her: Happy Rhodes

And finally, the rarest of rare: Deirbhile Ni Bhrolchain. AFAIK she's only recorded one album ("Smaointe").
I don't understand a single word of it, yet still it strikes a chord with me and gives me goosebumps every time I put it on.

No doubt, man.  She is awesome, and so is Epica as a band.
