Does the HM-601 sound that much better to justify the insane price for a measly 2GB of storage?  Does that change when someone uses the line out with an amp instead of headphone out?

If 2G internal is too little, for a little more money, why not go for the 602, which has 16GB internal, holds the same 32GB SDHC's and sounds a step up from the 601? Besides that, you have the option to use the internal DAC with a PC or other device and then you can use the amp of your choice through the line out (just another option like the HM-801).

Since you mention it, I'm debating whether I should upgrade my 601 to a 602.  A lot of people seem to think that the difference in SQ is inconsequential.  What is your opinion on that?  Have you heard both?

agreed.. the S: Flo 2 DESTROYS the j3 in SQ.

but the S:FLO 2 UI and lack of Gapless is kind of a bummer.

I'm not absolutely sure, but gapless playback, must be tough to include in the firmware because HD accommodated everyone on all of their complaints except for that one.

That area of computer science is not my strong point.

Yes, I have. My son has the 601 and I have the 602. The difference is slight, but the 602 does use higher quality parts. The 601 was introduced for those who wanted to lay out less money.

THanks, very helpful info!  I'm seeing an upgrade in my future, I don't suppose you want to trade me that 602 for a lovely 601?

Hate to press you on that but care to offer any more specifics?  I imagine the opamps are different but it appears to be a mystery as to which are in the 601.  Anything other than the opamps to your knowledge?  Does the LO still pass through the opamps on the 60x series like it does on the Sflo2?  I guess if not then it makes sense to go w/ the 601 if the LO is the same between the two unless you need a DAC?

I have never really compared them side by side (just got the 601 3 weeks ago at a Head-Fi Meet).

I'll give them both a good ride before the Giant game tomorrow.

Are there any in depth comparisons between the two?    Does the HM-601 ship from the US?

immmtbiker is going to offer up some impressions it seems.  I plan to loan LFF my 602 so he can offer up something on the 601/602/Colorfly.

Sorry, I meant the S:flo2 and HM-601.  I'm actually considering the 601 now anyway.  I wonder what the odds are I could get it by Christmas...

I consider the 602 quite a bit more than the 601, $450 is a ton for a DAP for me.

You can't use any amp through the line out on the 601?

Sorry, I read this quote and I guess he's talking about once it's hooked up to the PC?

So confused.  I want the S:flo2 or the HM-601 for Christmas, since the S:flo2 is out I'd probably go for the 601 if there was a chance of it getting here in time.  I wonder how much SR225s would sound.

I got my 601 within a week of ordering it so your chances of getting it by Christmas are excellent.  On the other hand, I ordered an S:Flo2 over 2 weeks ago and haven't received it yet!

Yes you can use an amp on the line out, I've been experimenting with my Pico Slim on the line out and it sounds quite good.  Whether you need to use an amp is up to you, the 601 produces plenty of power and the sound is quite good without an amp.
