They're good for classical until you get to hear the HD 800s :)

I find that even for large symphonic works LCD's sound very realistic, that is, like going to the symphony. I haven't heard the HD800s. Are they more natural/realistic sounding? As I understand it, their strengths lie in things like detail, "instrument separation", and soundstage.

I am 100% positive the earpads were 100% completely sealed around my ears, those angle pads are thick as heck. Is that what you are referring to? I'm talking about the acoustic ring that's behind the earpad that leaks sound almost as bad as many open cans. Look it up I'm not kidding they're barely closed when it comes to sound leaking out.

I have played around with the entire Denon D*K range and they provided a good seal to me, just shame it's sound couldn't live up to it's comfort level.

The word "same" fits.  I had the D5000 for 25 days before I decided to send them back.  They were very comfortable and maybe the most gorgeous headphones I've had.  I really wanted to love them.  It's just a shame the bass drowned out the midrange too much for my taste.

The HD800s strength is a mostly extreme transparency and extremely large soundstage. For symphonic work that extra separation makes all the difference, IMO.

Gotcha.  I don't know if I'd appreciate that, but I'm afraid my curiosity will drive me towards HD800s one day.    I held off for years on upgrading from HD580 to HD650.  I'm still holding out for HD1000 :)

OK-I give up--will you finally tell us what you did???

Jack

I think he has done something to the pads, maybe put different pads in the leather..? If you take a look at the pic of the fat end you can't see the stitching around the edges. All LCD2 leather pads have this. And the pads also look slimmer.
