No, I need 32/384 WAV music on a 32 GB microSD card or else it will sound like crap.

Don't forget that you have to buy the card with the fastest read speed

I just read Tyll's off- the- grid road trip review of the AK120.  People who plan on using the unit's other features should pay attention.

Being a motorcycle guy I want to like, believe, and agree with this guy. However, hasn't most HFs discounted his reviews? Just asking.

At the moment listening to my AK120 w 1.32 and my 334s, to Eric Johnson's Lone Star.
Phonominal sounding really. I think it sounds better than my old stack. What I do know is I have a mighty small, good looking, good feeling player.

Do you mean Tyll's reviews in general? Certainly not. He's very well respected.

If you mean his comments specifically about ak100 120 software, then I don't know. Although, having owned an ak100, I agree with a lot of his issues. The playlist issue is real and truly bad.

I've never used playlists, even on the 1,000s of hours on I~Devices. I just go with scramble. I screen my albums before loading, trying to make sure every song is a winner.
I have heard playlists and album art are big hassles with the AKs.

I just use folders as it is much easier than play list.  Also if you get dBpoweramp, you will also get the ID3 tag plug-ins for your files, which makes managing album arts and tags much more easier.

If this was a subjective observation about sound quality, you can agree or disagree based on your own listening.  But these were his findings regarding the functionality of the software so I would more inclined to take note.

I almost never use playlists myself.  I have had to tag some music to get it in the right place and with right artists, and that was a bit of a pain but other than that i am overall very happy.

When I auditioned the AK120 at Mook festival yesterday, I was listening to the Highlife song in DSD format from Jazz At The Pawnshop album.
The sound was just eerily good, reminds me of the SACD version that I used to play on my Bladelius CD player from my previous hifi rig.
But without the ancient fat PS3 player that can rip SACD files, I can only listen to DSD files available from the web.

It's probably from the SACD that's why :).

I read this review and I have to say that next to an iPod/iPhone the AK120 does not have great control software. But the sound quality is night and day better. I knew I was making this trade off when I bought it, and I have no regrets. If his criticisms get us better software I won't complain.

I was thinking I could make my own playlists by creating symbolic links to the the music I wanted in the playlist in a special folder. I'll report back if I get time to try it out. But I'm more of an album guy so I really don't miss it.

Here is what I have running thru the AK120 and they all sounds wonderful.

AK120 -> Shure SE535 - Volume 50-60
AK120 -> Sony MDR EX-1000 - Volume 60-70
AK120 -> AKG K3003i - Volume 50-65

AK120-> LCD-2 Rev 2 - Volume Max 75 (good)
AK120-> LCD-2 Rev 2 - Schiit Lyr - Volume Max 75 & Lyr at 12 (Awesome)

My Favorite is AK120 & AKG K3003i, then AK120 & EX-1000... For certain songs, AK120 & SE535 is very nice...

I have on order Aurisonic ASG-2 and will share impression later... Tomorrow I will receive the Audio-Technica ATH-W5000. I bought it because I am curious, since on Astell&Kern website recommend this hp...
