The AKG K712 Pro Support and Impressions Thread

Bass response is comparatively weak, akin to the K701/K702 in quantity

If he can't differentiate between the bass on the standard models and the K702/65... then there's clearly an issue there. That 3db bass boost he hears on the K712, is the same exact one I heard from the K702/65 compared to the Q701. I mean, is he seriously kidding?

I also had an earlier production K701 (7 bump headband instead of the newer 8s), and it's so different from the K702/65, it's not even funny. Like as night and day as two 'similar' headphones can be. In K70x terms, they are TOTAL OPPOSITES.

But ok. I'll just hold out for more comparisons.

Indeed, most of this almost seems nonsensical given Head-Fi's body of knowledge around this subject contradicts everything he has written.

Fun bit of trivia, he differentiates between early and late production K701 by the presence or absence of the clover logo on the button on the side of the headband.

I'll do my best here to write up in English what OP vineland said in his relevant posts.

Awesome!  Thanks for the translation.

Like MLE said though, something is clearly wrong when he is saying that the Q701 is lusher, thicker, and bassier than the K702 Anniversary. That's exactly backwards from what everyone at Head-fi has experienced.

I think the only takeaway here is that a more critical comparison of the K712 against the rest of the lineup is warranted. I've poked around on a few other Chinese forums and the general opinion is that there is a difference between the K702.65 and the K712, whatever that may be and to what extent. There may be a shred of truth in what the AKG rep said in that the K712 is a further step in the direction that the K702.65 took in terms of tuning.

Someone should offer to send Tyll their K702 65th (not a Q701 + Annie pads) as a loaner for measurements. I think he has a Q701 and could get a K712 from his neighbor.
Those K712 measurements look too good to be true.

I also want to see measurements for the K612, but they look identical to the old K601.

Can't afford the K712, but wish I could! Sounds interesting at least.

But if I ever did i'd return it if it was identical to the 65th.

Yes, I know.  I don't know why you couldn't have just said that.

This could give us actual proof if any of them really sound different. Maybe the 65th and K712 measurements are very different. If they measure the same it still doesn't mean much. Not always.

The Q701 and K702 have similar measurements on some sites and are quite different sounding. Let's not go there..

I'm glad I bought the Q701 before seeing measurements though.

I can't do that with the K712 because it's too stupid expensive just for some possible minor differences. I'm still not convinced it's really different than the 65th.

BTW someone should take a picture of the K712 driver! Possibly just one of those really good K702 drivers that got their own part #.

Oh and I wonder if the K712 memory foam pads are 100% identical to the 65th.
I wonder if the K712 is more airy sounding than the 65th. If AKG managed to pull that off with those crappy memory foam pads then i'll be sort of impressed.
The Q701 sounds more airy and spacious sounding than the 65th but not the K702 (obviously).

If the K712 is midway between the 65th and Q701 in terms of warmth, then I might love it. The 65th would be perfect if it had a little more upper mids and treble (just for my preferences).

Need to know if K712 has more upper mids and treble compared to the Annie...

I ordered the K712 today, should have them the beginning of next week. I sold my annies a while back so my comparison will be from memory, but I'll try. Then we can all take a vote on who I send them to that currently has the annies in hand and can do a decent A/B test for all of us......

I know it's early... but I put my vote in for chicolom...

So it's one vote for chicolom!  Here's what I propose, feel free to chime in with your ideas.  I'm probably going to get these Monday or Tuesday of next week based on if they ship today or tomorrow.  I'll leave them playing for a couple days for those who believe in burn in, but realistically it won't be more than 50 or so hours, and will post my impressions.  Thursday or Friday I'll ship them USPS priority mail in the States to the person who has been involved in this thread, has some history here, gets the most votes, and has the 702AE in house   With all due respect to our international members, shipping out of the country is not going to be possible.  I'm on vacation and will be out of touch the week of Aug 19th.  Whomever we choose can do their comparison.  Only thing I ask is don't smoke while using them and don't take anything apart that isn't meant to be user swapped, in other words anything more than the earpads.  Then if they want to ship them to someone else so we get an additional comparison that's fine with me, as long as they agree to ship back to me so that I get them back sometime the following week.  Fair enough?

It should probably be me! I also have K702 pads on the way too, so I can make a four way comparison! K702.65 stock/ K702.65 w/angled pads VS. K712 Pro, K712 Pro w/angled K702 stock pads.

Who else is willing to do such a thing? :D

The K/Q70X series has the same drivers and has measured nearly identical in frequency response: http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/akg-quincy-jones-q701-sound-and-measurements

Is the K712 the same deal?  Is it the exact same driver part number?

Different capsule numbers for the K702 65th and K712. Could be they just use similar or the same drivers, but a special hand selected "special" version that gets a new part number.

BTW the K702 and Q701 sound quite different. Many of us have compared them both and found a lot of differences, but let's not go there..it will just derail the thread. It's all in the Q701 thread.
To put it short, the Q701 is a bit warmer and fuller sounding than the old K702. Nobody could figure out the differences. I did notice the Q701 did seem to have more distortion than the K702 in measurements.
OK, maybe not, but looked it.

I don't trust chicolom so don't send a K712 to him.

Just kidding! I suggest sending them to him first since he's done a lot to compare previous AKG models (so has MLE).

Too bad I don't have the K702 65th Anniversary. It's the Q701 + Anniversary pads which is said to be 99% identical. Two people did A/B comparisons and couldn't hear any differences.

With all due respect, chicolom has all those things covered and he has already compared AKG's flagships in the past. I would put a vote in for MLE, also, but he doesn't have the Annie (nor angled pads) in his possession. And while I agree with td that the Q701 w/memory pads sounds 99% identical to the Annie, I think the readers would want a direct comparison to the stock Annie.

Just my two cents... which are worth $37 and change...

Edit: Plus, if the K712 is different than the Annie, he can then compare it to the X1 just for good measure...
