The AKG K712 Pro Support and Impressions Thread

I'll believe it when I hear them. Until then, the different driver part might just be the same exact drivers that they are specifically picking out (cherry picking) out of line for being better matched.

Hopefully the K712 has more upper mids and maybe a tiny bit more treble than the K702 65th. I totally expect them to be the same though.
Maybe it's like the mid-point between the Q701 and 65th in terms of bass/warmth. Highly unlikely.
For some reason I just can't imagine the K702 65th being used in a studio. It just seems way too warm. Even the Q701 is pretty warm.
The only thing the Q701 needs is better low bass extension. Not really, but it wouldn't hurt. For my preferences it doesn't need to be that much warmer or with any extra mid-bass.
I doubt you could give the Q701 more low bass without ruining what I like about it.

Who knows, maybe i'll love the K712 Pro when I don't really like the 65th that much.

Try custom damping and cables then. For example foam from PC motherboard boxes or just original AKG foam net pads for K24x/27x. Maybe this is what you're looking for...

to be honest if Q701 is too warm for you then older K701 might be better for you.
for myself the K702.65 is the most balanced headphones i have heard,
maybe a little too much Mids around 1K~2K Hz,
but that's prolly what makes the "AKG" signature sound on their K7XX after all

again, it seems we need more inputs on differences between K702.65 VS K712

How is this obvious? Who has evidence that the drivers are different? It could be something as simple as drivers being cherry picked from the line, and the pads are obviously different. However once you swap pads, the Q701 and at least the K702/65 are 99.9% the same, the difference being driver to driver variation, which I am almost positive is the same difference between the K712 and those before it. Put some standard K70x or Q701 pads on the K712, and im sure you'll get the same sound as the standard K70x/Q models, driver to driver variation aside.

Hell, I had 3 different DT990/600 at home at the same time, and they all sounded different. Driver variation exists, and can make two of the same headphone sound like two different headphones.

I was mainly trying to get Frizts to compare K712 and K702.65 a bit more.
since we are trying to see if it is just another color change, there is no need to compare K712 to Q701.

I think at this point most people agree after pad swap with Q701, it's almost identical to K702.65,

but technically Q701 is not the same K702.65 because they uses different pads.
and for comparison it is better to exclude those variations with Q701's and just use K702.65 as a base point.

not sure if you understand me...

He used the q701 with k712 pads, so as many has agreed on thats so to say the same as k702 annie.

What about difference in playing Metal ?
Rammstein, Iron Maiden, Metallica...
The last albums have good quality sound.

I am interrested about sound stage space and speedy bass interpretation of 712 PRO vs 702 65th.

Well I have got my k712 pro since tuesday and i really like them, great soundstage, great for gaming and music alike.
But I'm a bit unsure how to drive them, I'm using a xonar essence stx and I was trying to find the right impedance settings, I read online that they have 62 Ohm, so does that mean i should use the lowest drive setting (<64 Ohm), or is the high setting fine aswell (64 - 300)? What harm could a wrong setting (especially to high) do to my headphones?

That setting is basically just gain. It isn't changing the output impedance. Set it to whichever has the right amount of volume adjustment for you.

thanks for the fast reply ok will keep it on high then
do exertnal amps actually have real gain to better power headphones drivers or are they all just upping the volume by +12 db?

They just up the volume.

High and Low gain are using the same amount of power.  When you switch to high gain you're not suddenly getting more power from the amp, all you are doing is starting from a higher volume.  So gain just affects what volume range you'll be using on the volume control.
