The AKG K712 Pro Support and Impressions Thread

Technically speaking, the AKG K7[whatever] series can be driven right off an iPhone if you wish to but the result wouldn't be at it's best performance.

Having tried E07K, E09K, iFi Micro iDSD, and Garage1217 PS3, the AKG K7something is best paired with something that offers good dynamic range, warm, and powerful.

I just bought a K712 and I am now in the market for a good portable dac/amp.
I know that there is a lot of talk in this forum about what is the best amp in combination with the K712.
But somehow I couldn't find a good advice. I am looking in the price range $ 150 - $ 250.
Any suggestions?

Im now considering getting these over the HE500s. Are the K712s fatiguing at all? People seem to describe them as darker, but not sure if thats relative to the previous 7 series offerings. Also how do these fair with metal? They need to be an all arounder for me, which would consist of rock, metal, electronic, and jazz.

The fact that theyre significantly lighter and more comfortable than the he500 really sells me. If i get them, i plan on using the O2/ODAC. I saw a lot of comparison earlier in the thread, but wanted to see how thoughts have changed. Compared to the he500s, how does the bass/mids/treble compare (stronger/weaker per range) to the 500.

Theyre nearly $100 cheaper which makes them seem really competitive

The K712 are less darker than the bright original K701/2 but definitely not dark like HD600/HD650 for instance :)

Depending on the recording my gone K702 65th annie could be a bit darker overall than my HD600 (direct comparison) ...

You mean  more dark than the K701/2s .....I hope...but yes less dark than the HD600/650s.

yes. Typo. Thanks guys for the correction!

Let me rephrase it myself:
The K712 / K702/65 is darker than the original K701/2 that is pretty bright. However, the K712 / K702/65 is less dark than the HD600/HD650.

Basically, and the K702 Annies are a little darker than the K712. The Q701 is also darker than the K701/2 but not Annie/K712 dark. The HD 600/650 are definitely darker than the K712/Annies, almost too much so at times.

I find the K712 pro a little bit darker than the K702/65th, but both are still very natural-balanced sounding... Anyway, I agree, the HD600 were too dark for my taste.

I thinks its the K712's brighter upper treble that makes it come across as a little brighter than the Annies to me. Putting on my HD 600 for the first time took me aback at it's darkness as I didn't remember the HD 600 being so dark when I first heard the HD 600 and the fact everyone says it's so neutral.

Ok, I really don't know if older Annies are darker, mine are late production unit and have the same pads that the K712, so maybe that makes them a little less dark... Maybe the new K7XX will be as dark as the older Annies as they are rumored to have older Annie pads... I'm really happy with my K702/65th the way they are.

So basically the K712s and Annies drivers are tuned differently? What would you say are the differences between the two? I've heard the old Annies personally.
