That new Grado smell...

You threw away your Grado pads? I think i would have tried Fabreeze spray on them,,or maybe washed them being theyre only foam. I spent $1.00 at a dollar store for a nice pair of black mens dress socks for a sock-mod on mine.
Im going to see about buying some uncut stock foam somewhere and try to make my own pads, and maybe i can even experiment with shapes and sizes, because seriously........$35 for a sponge??? *#%$$$*&#@$!!!!!!!!!!
Thats about as dumb as some audiophile tweeks like paying $100 for these little Cardas woodblocks for under your CD player! Ill just use some ceder moth blocks that they sell for your closet at any Walmart store for $5.00 if i wanted pretty little wood blocks under my stuff. Like some metal cones are $7.00 and some are $80 each!!! LUDAFREEKINGKRIS!!! Oh,and they sound better,,theyre TUNED to bring out bass,or treble,or soundstage...lol. I use rubber furniture coasters that cost me like $1.79 for four at Walmart, and they work. Just use them upsidedown. And what about headphone prices? Change some miniscule thing about a set, change the model number and they sound a hair better and charge twice the price! Like the difference between Grado SR-125 and SR-225........a more open rear screen and closer driver tolerances.....for $45 more. Ill change the screen myself,,and shouldnt the driver tolerances be close enough already? Theyre that bad that you can hear a tolerance difference??? Sorry,im on a roll....ive always wanted to bitch in public about this...lol. *Steps off my soapbox*

You THREW them out, the possibly stupidest thing you could have done.

Were you looking for some way to be able to bash upon Todd and Grado, at the same time, in a completely irrelivent thread? If so, you've succeeded.

You are very wrong to accuse everybody like you are. Sending back Grados for their smell? Sending back a pair of flats because they don't have the useless slits in them?? Making a whole public ordeal of the entire matter to try to embarass the retailers because you have nothing better to do?! Earbuds break, deal with it! They're cheap. Things get delayed, deal with it! If you paid for 2-day shipping then it's going to get to you in two days or less by ship time. Deal with it! What do you want, the entire world to stop for you to get your instant gratification!?

It's your fault for throwing money out the window.

Sorry, but I've been holding this in for too long, and I've read all of your stupid posts and wanted to squeeze something until it exploded.

hey I agree with you

I sound ridiculous? I dont care how they sound. The fact is theyre over priced. I see youve been sucked into the audiophile drama also. Think about it.......its a piece of sponge! Thats it! $35 for a piece of special one of a kind sponge from alien sponge fish from the outer regions of planet wegotyousucker. Im sorry,if anything theyre worth $5.00 seriously. Grado packages their headphones in a huge piece of foam when you buy them. How nice of them to give you such a nice big piece of packing foam probably worth $800 dollars or so in "Flats" price,by weight. If placing a penny on top of your CD player made your $500 player sound like a $10,000 player; should pennies now be worth $35? (Only if audiophiles are buying them for tweeks of course). One such example......I went to a petshop to buy my parrot nail clippers. They were $12.00! Oh,,but theyre special for parrots........but the same ones were in the dog section for $8.00(same exact model number stamped into the stainless steel). Whatever,,,yes i do buy some stupid things for my hobby that are over priced, but i admit theyre over priced. A piece of sponge for half the price of a pair of Grado SR-60's , or almost twice the price of Koss KTX Pro-1's. Ok,so lets see....the foam costs us 25 cents to make.....if they sound awesome we'll charge $35,,and if they sound ok we'll charge $20(which is still more than original Grado Bowls or comfys). Oh,,and no worries,im not yelling. I just wanted to explain my point of view.

Given the magnitude of the change in sound which is greater than when I change my source from MP3 player to computer sound card, and more then the addition of the $100 amp I'm using (which really didn't change the sound much at all) then you can see why some people who like the sound of the flats believe it's money well spent. I do agree with you that they're way overpriced the same way I think CD/DVDs, Nike Snikers, Designer Lables etc are overpriced given the simplicity and cost of the materials used in their manufacture. I don't know how Todd is producing he's flats however, it may actually cost him quite a bit to have the material shaped and cut in such small quantities professionally, Unless ofcourse he carefully sits there in a small dark dank room making sure every slit is Halal... while all the time contemplating how to take over the world.

I've seen the flat Grado pads on for $10 US online. Google.
If you paid $35 ... crazy, what are those like extra special pads?
(Who is "Todd" - is he like the after-market Grado headphone pad specialist or something?)

Anyway, smell on new SR60's isn't that pungent. I just borrowed my girlfriend's one-day old headphones and had a whiff... couldn't smell anything until my nose was right on them pretty much. I was wearing them the other night and didn't notice any smell. Of course now she thinks I'm a crackhead...

She says the smell like manufactured plastic and foam. Go figure!

I'm assuming the smell is entirely in the foam pads, so if someone wants that "new Grado" smell back, just buy new pads right? Cups or flats, whatever you like, I've heard the flats fit all the models, not just the SR60's that come with them by default. I assume the reverse is true as well.

Now you've got me sniffing my new AKG K271's... of course I hadn't noticed any smell there either, but when my nose is right on the pads, I can smell a subtle leather/pleather smell. Ok now I'm getting strange looks. You guys need someone else in the room with you to tell you how crazy you are!

Oh well you make me laugh, which is always good.
cheers

Have you received those Grados yet from me? You'll find they will probably still have the smell in the box

EDIT: The Grado smell, I mean - not the hair smell!!

I used a different shampoo back then...

I haven't recieved them yet. I am sure the 225's will show up this week. I am building a second system and the 225's are critical for completion of this new and fully operational battle station......

I just got a pair of Grado SR60's from Todd and they smell like plastic and foam, nothing strange. Aman, why are you getting mad at the kid for wanting something that should work like its supposed to? Maybe he couldnt get through. I ordered my headphones from Todd on Monday and I didnt get tracking info until the day I received the Grados, which was yesterday. $hit happens and so do misunderstandings. Cut him some slack like you cut Todd some slack and we can move on back to the topic at hand.

The sr225's i got smell exactly like the basement workshop of an elder friend of mine who passed away about 2 years ago. To me, it smells like cinnamon, smoke, and musk (but then again i did buy them slightly used). *shrugs* But it makes me feel very comfortable and secure. And the bliss of Led Zeppelin on these....wow....i almost drooled.

My MS1s smell like a guitar shop. I think it's the smell of acoustic foam. It is kind of annoying because the smell triggers a memory that I've forgotten. Kind of like rubber and mint. They smell really strong though, and I hope it goes away soon.
