One question I have is about the Schiit Jotunheim R - I know they are essentially functional with the 1200 but is it simply a matter of getting the male/female XLR adapter? Or does it have to be a specialty adapter to ensure everything is in the proper phase?

Thanks! I am not going to attempt a ribbon swap now - concerned with damaging them so soon after getting them. I just wish there were directions for the replacement process anyway.Just a female <> male adapter. Or buy raal sr1a cables.

to be clear the adapter itself needs to be female on both end if going into Jot R when using gl1200 cable. Ribbon swap is easy, but don't force anything if u have to force then you are doing it wrong. Thanks! Sorry to ask again but with changing ribbons, are any tools required to lift that little hatch from the top of the baffle? Or is it done by simply lifting the inside edge by hand?

The door slides open no tools required. Be careful as u slide ribbon out and move it slowly to a safe resting area- line up small pins with new ribbon on same side and you should be all set- I will be buying new pads from Vespar custom pads as I am talking with a few owners now of the GL1200 as well...

How much for the Vespar pads?
I know Vesper makes pads for the Koss 950 and that would seem to be of similar size as the GL1200, unless they are making them custom.
I am using the velour pads more but will experiment, especially if I manage to change the ribbons. The one thing this headphone seems to do is make you forget about technicalities (I am not a graph guy anyway). Nothing is exaggerated - it just has this enveloping, voluptuous sound. It's definitely a unique presentation. I am not sure the RAAL would be worth the additional $2k for a better ribbon driver experience. I tried them a couple of years ago and don't remember too much about the sound (needed a quieter listening environment) but the form factor was a little strange and not sure if it was comfortable enough.

I’m probably going custom with pads so around $100 is my guess same as my stax custom Vasper pads
The silver ribbon needs a ton of break in time since it’s stretched tighter than gold

I managed to change the ribbons with no problem. It came with gold installed so I switched to silver. I tend to favor the silver ones if only because the sound seems more neutral and detailed. I like the sound with the velour pads too. I am not a big believer in "burn in" - at least to the point where there would be a significant change - but I am in for a treat if they do improve with some hours under them. They already sound impressive.

yes I agree the silver have more detail and a bit wider stage and a bit more spacial 3d space enjoy! you have one of the best headphones made at this time period. And with two choices of ribbons you have it all!

I think John and I agree on the signatures of the two ribbon types. My biggest complaint with the silver is the bass distortion in complex passages and bleeds into the mids.

yup again turn the volume down and they will not do that as I mention in the review - the gold handles things like that better- there are trade offs - its a crazy headphone worthy of the craziness in what it does well
It's hard to explain but the sound from the GL1200 is sort of FM stereo-like, lush, and pleasant - the detail is all there but it's not harsh. The only other headphone I have now to compare it with is the HiFiMan Sundara, which I actually really like, but it's so strange going back to it now - it's a relatively smooth and even planar, perhaps a bit bright but compared to the GL1200, it's a bit of an assault on the ears.
