The Hifiman approach is interesting in that respect.. Take for instance the HE-R9 combination with the Bluemini R2R add-on on adapter... perhaps a direction that Focal also could take?
If add-ons would be the route then you have full lineups ready to adopt that. If something like FIIOs UTWS5 could add anc to easy to drive full size closed backs some people wouldn't be even interested in gettine new cans wit that built in.

I wonder how functional ANC could be on an add on module. Placement of microphones at specific locations around the ear cup would seem to have a big impact on the ability to effectively cancel noise. It would be interesting to try and see if it would work though as an engineering research exercise.

Thing is what marketing would say. If potential boost of existing products would be worth such approach. As alternative would be additional product line.
In fact Iam wondering if high end wireless cans would not canibalize closed back segment of passive cans. As long as wireless would not be high-end enough there is less risk...
It is not about pursuing best for the market. At the end money is what counts.

Yes and no. Certainly very successful companies have cannibalized their own products in the past (Ipods, Ipod touch etc). Sometimes an alpha product that does both roles is even more profit (one production line and CS/RD pipeline; larger target market).
Also, One could imagine if the market shifts towards hifi music streaming platforms gaining steam AND headphone jacks disappearing theres an increased market share that doesnt compete with the wired closed back (DAP + wires vs phone + BT cans)

I agree fully.
Tbh my adventure started just in the beginning of pandemics from Audeze Penrose as I wanted good sound within package having mic, dongle wireless and independent bt. It satisfied my use case (until very hot summer).
Either way I got caught by planar entry point and started looking for upgrade. After multiple listening sessions (and budget adjustments) I finished with LCD-X 2021 as cans. At some point before I ditched my CD collection so I was up to streaming only. I was thinking on various scenarios for sources. DAP wasn't good choice as I didnt have my own files so it would be streaming/offline streaming service. I love explorations with streaming service. On the move it would be cans + dap + phone (for internet connection) so not ideal
Started with hipdac 2, now on xdsd gryphon, as I am much more often going away from my couch LCD-Xs are anything other than "mobile" - so now looking for alternatives not compromising SQ.
As you said phone + high quality bt cans seem to be one option. For now I am going to start IEM adventure with Timeless, will see if that's going to be it... At least I will buy some time to see how market direction will unfold.
It should have wifi and streaming module in headband (roon ready, tidal connect and rest of such services) that would make it differentiated and worth 3k eur...
Tbh it is far from impossible.

This things you're mentioning are irrelevant, even that the sound maybe isn't very good, no aptX or other things missing. The very more important things about this headphone are: "is carefully crafted from a selection of intertwined marbled maple, walnut, and mahogany wood" AND that "only a limited number of this commemorative model are available in the world".

Yeah!!!
And bunch of small diamond plated elves inside skilled in singing & playing all instruments humanity ever developed, for natural timbre and sound.
I love the idea of the track pad and gestures to change track and volume. In my opinion it makes the Ts look sleek and finished with no physical buttons sticking out.
Im sure it is going to sound amazing. My take on the Ts is it does a great job of giving listeners the techie features we have all become accustomed to, while providing a true HiFi experience.
Can't wait to hear some impressions from you guys! These headphones are so interesting given how tiny/foldable/compact they are. This headphone has the potential to be for every single use case: on the move, around the house, at your desk, playing games, longer travels etc. You could probably even statsh these in many larger jacket pockets.
But like I said, the BT technolgy will feel so dated once more products with the Qualcomm QCC5171 launches. :/ Even tho it will take a few years for LE-audio to become a thing for most products, I'm hoping there's a successor to this headphone by then. It just about so much more than just SQ, LE audio will mean a new standard that will replace the crappy SBC. It will mean that we'll have a standard BT codec that is low-latency, great SQ, low power demand, improved voice calls and being able to connect to several sources.
