I really did talk myself into it cause of their 30 day return policy, isn't that such an amazing thing?

Vive Le HeadRoom!

No you didn't talk yourself into it. It's me, Plonter, Aimlink and all of us on the thread that did you in

Okay I'll give you guys the credit

I was even considering going full out crazy-like and ordering the BUDA/BUDAC with balanced cables... phew!! The cost doesn't seem worth it though, and Plonter reinforced that idea with his input earlier.

For the difference of $100.00 between the UDA and the BUDA. The choice is easy.

Apr 27, 2010 at 1:49 AM Post #50 of 153
You're kidding right? If I bought the BUDA I'd have to buy the the BUDAC as well, totaling $2849 for the pair. A little too expensive for me I decided. Plus I'd have to buy extra interconnects and a Cardas cable for my 650s, another 400 or so.

Hehehehe, like I said we are trying to do you in :-). But seriouly if you wait for a few weeks and place your order around can jam time you'll get 20% off. And if you know how to negotiate a little bit plus selling you desktop, you may be able to get the system down to around $1600.00. I got the system below that.

Just stepped over to the dark(er) side and ordered an Ultra! I was talking to Jeremy on the phone and was asking him the best way to go around conducting the transaction and told me that if I A) didn't like it or didn't think it was worth the money to just simply return it, or B) If I did like it just sell the regular Desktop here on the forum. Which would be easier than just sending the Ultra back, THEN sending mine in for an upgrade and me being out of an amp for 2 weeks or so. Plus I can also include the Astrodyne to sweeten the deal when I sell as I don't need it when I got the DPS. I really did talk myself into it cause of their 30 day return policy, isn't that such an amazing thing?

OH...so you didn't get the buda uda pair in the end? if it was a joke, I totaly fell for it
redface.gif

anyway,I wonder how much improvement do the UDA has over the ulrea micro dac. would it be worth getting the UDA and keep using my ultra micro amp? I am sure that the UDA is one of the best dac's in the industry.

maybe if we wait a little longer, headroom will replace the current chip to a better one.

Damn..I feel like upgrading to the BUDA/UDA myself right now! the headroom sound but only much more powerful than what I have right now.

Hmmm.Well, too late! Like I said I'm not going to go balanced, but why would the gear be 20% during CanJam?

You talkin to me? No I did buy the Ultra amp/dac, I DIDN'T buy the balanced, WAY too expensive for essentially the same electronics. When I was talking to Jeremy on the phone yesterday I also asked him the same question about HeadRoom's amps ever being outdated cause of technology, similar to TV's or computers. He said that, yes, lower end models (not necessarily headroom's stuff) and amps do tend to become outdated and become cheaper. But that's not the case with higher end audio like the desktop series and said that it won't be changing anytime soon (the lineup). I was reading about the Max electronics that come with the Ultra yesterday Plonter, and it doesn't seem that they can replace the current circuitry with "better" chips... I mean I think they've largely found the ultimate sound they want and perfected it with the desktops and they use the absolute best microchips available (the little components on the board cost $20 individually). I guess they could always retweak the sound to whoever else's liking but that would just be changing it, not making it better.

Edit: Oh yeah, you SHOULD go ahead and upgrade to balanced and be my guinea pig on how balanced sounds...!

This forms the basis behind my current quiescence with HeadRoom gear.

I love the sound so much that I have the Ultra Micro Stack at work and the Ultra Desktop at home, but going balanced? Not particularly interested. I'm enjoying myself very much, have taken a step or two into Ultra high end territory and the returns aren't that worth it for me.... YET??

Awesome. I was hoping I would find someone on these forums who has both. How do they compare to each other?

They sound sonically pretty much the same to me. I use Astrodyne PSU's with the Micro units and use the DPS with the Desktop unit. To be truthful, I've never A/B'd since they share the same electronics and I didn't really hear any significant differences on a cursory listen.

However, I prefer the Desktop Unit because I can use my 1/4" terminated cans without an adaptor and I've come to realize that the 1/8" plugs are not only delicate, but the connections not very secure.

I ended up with the Ultra Desktop when I asked for a maxed out Desktop Home without DAC. I wanted to be able to use the 1/4" plug with my cans. They didn't offer that option, so I thought about it and felt it would be cool to have the Ultra sound both at home and at the office. So here I am.

Plonter, that was the dilemma I had last summer. I had the ultra stack and I knew the Ultra Micro amp in term of SQ is almost 95% if not 99% the same as the UDA, so I thought about just upgrading the Ultra Micro Dac to the Ultra Desktop Dac and that is a real upgrade because they use an advance sabre chips that is much better than the one in the Ultra Micor Dac. In terms of budget, that will give you the best sound package for the dollar spent. But then the Ultra micro really doesn't stack up well with the Udac, so finally I decided to go the the Buda jsut so I have some real upgrade from the Ultra Micro amp.
maybe if we wait a little longer, headroom will replace the current chip to a better one.
I talked about this issue in another thread. I don't think headroom is going to upgrade the Ultra micro series. In fact, I thought they have disacontinued the Ultra micro series. With technology advancing at the speed they are and new and better chips are coming out faster than you could burn in your new purchase, product life cycle is getting shorter and shorter. There is really not much incentive to do upgrade to a product line when you can design a new model for less. Just look at the Max unit of couple of years ago. They were selling between 4000 -5000 range and then there were very little upgrade done to those units since then and before the current top of the line came out.

And I have a big feeling that you will......

They frequently runs promotion at shows like Can Jam.

To go from Ultra Micro Amp to a BUDA is a real upgrade for me, no need to be guinea pig. I have it for eight months now.
