I haven't had any hearing loss that I know of but I haven't been tested either. I now listen to my music even softer than I ever have...and have been a soft/medium listener all my life anyway. I find that music can be just as enjoyable when listening at low volume levels with the right gear. A good amp with the right hp's will still offer impressive "dynamics" when played at lower levels.

I do this as well, without even thinking it. I actually ended up testing my "quiet listening" levels, when I'm doing other work and just have music in the background. It was always less than 55db. I'm surprised people listen so loud for so long!

Sorry to hear this OP.
Keep your chin up. Don't let it get you down. Things could be worse.
As you can tell by my HF name I have tinnitus, but mine was/is not caused by loud noises. I have autonomic neuropathy which causes a lot more problems than just tinnitus, but the tinnitus is one of the more annoying symtoms I have for sure...
Mine will never go away, but I have learned to deal with it and you will too. Just focus on the positive things in your life and all will be well... :)

The cheap earbuds that are packaged with iPods are doing unbelievable damage to the hearing of today's youth.  The lack of sound quality and isolation from the environment prompt people to turn them up much louder than they should.  It's an epidemic in the making.

Agreed.  When I was younger I never thought about the repercussions of enjoying music at dramatic volumes, I bought myself a nice pair of IEM's and rode around on my motorcycle for hours until the persistent ringing and ear infections led me to a doctor who informed me that IEM's or even buds, that block airflow will lead to harmful bacteria growth within the ear canal which can cause irreversible damage.   It seems ridiculous that every child is told early on not to look at the sun directly but hardly anyone emphasizes the importance of treating your ears with the same delicate respect (in my experience).  I do not know if I have tinnitus, but the ringing sometimes makes it hard to sleep, a situation I imagine nobody would intentionally put themselves knowing that it would not pass a few days after that loud concert.  This is such an avoidable problem that it really does make me sad when I see someone on the bus, with there buds playing at volume levels annoying for even the people sitting around them, and I know that commenting would be interpreted lastly, if at-all as me having good intentions for the individual.

I have had an issue with my right ear that when i hear high pitched noises (usually my 8 year old daughter) my ear starts to distort, i fix it by holding my nose and blowing (like you might do on a plane).

Anyway freaked me out so i  bought some Canford MDR-7506's , they are limited to 88dba, the BBC issue these to their engineers. They sound excellent and ease my mind.

Ironically enough , headphones may be the cure for tinnitus in the end :

It is normal for your ear to 'distort' when you hear loud noises. It is a defense mechanism. The distortion should dissappear immediately after the loud noise (eg. your daughter) is gone

Likewise mate, sorry you're experiencing the constant annoyance of tinnitus. It is no consolation of course that it is pretty much a self-inflicted injury, not one that was caused deliberately, but something that occurs through long periods of exposure to high sound and noise levels. It's a pity that the majority of headphone manufacturers do not take the incidence of tinnitus as seriously as they should do. They have at least a level responsibility to inform customers and users of the inherent danger of exposure to high volume sound environments for long time periods and whilst I certainly am no advocate of passing all the blame on to manufacturers, (or totally absolving those affected by this affliction) it wouldn't hurt to be a bit more proactive in raising people's awareness of tinnitus.

Bareyb, I hope your ears recover at least to a state where they aren't driving you crazy and that you can still enjoy your music. And everyone else, just remember that once your ears are damaged, that's it, they pretty much stay that way.

In such situations I tend to try to remove myself from the area that is causing pain. Or use something to block out the noise. I get that all the time where loud music is blaring. It's very bad from those giant ass speakers....

I really wonder if bareyb ever came back to the site and read the responses.

Would be a shame if he hasn't.

Anyway I would recommend looking into "Ear Candling".  People get a tinnitus type sound when they have ear or sinus infections, and apparently we pretty much all have some sort of crap in there to a certain extent...  Supposedly it will get out not just tones of wax(which it definitely does), but all sorts of bacteria and nasty ***** in there that could be causing some sort of low level infection in your inner ear or sinuses... maybe it would help?  I want to have it done myself soon to get out the wax at the bare minimum...

I wish you the best and hopefully it doesn't get to an unbearable point.

for anyone who is interested in doing this, I wouldn't do it as many research shows it doesn't do anything and is consider not safe.  Many cases of accident and harm.  Just throwing it out there.  I would just go to a doctor/ear specialist.
Nothing against you Darrel, just what I have learn about it in the past from reading medical magazine.
