Darn it:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

I saw this on CNN just a few minutes ago.  It is the end of an era and I am concerned for his health being the catalyst to his resignation.  Although he'll stay on as Board Chairman, it just won't be the same.  I wish him and Tim Cook well.  Apple and I have had a love/hate relationship since the late 80's, but it has been mostly good times.

I am not an apple Fanboy or a fan of their products but I respect Steve Jobs contribution to computing and hope he gets better. It is sad to see such a great CEO go, but I hope the best for apple. I personally hope they keep their great customer service.

I find it odd that he didn't take on the CTO - or, Chief Technology Officer role.  Though, being on the board and an employee would mean that he'll still be a contributing factor - as long as he feels up to the job.

Ironically, Apple has been hinging on surpassing ExxonMobil as the largest company for a few hours here and there in the market this month.  It's hard to imagine a technology company over-shadowing a merged oil company, but I guess these are the times.

Steve have done a great job with the company, amazing leadership and nice products.

Best of luck to the new Apple's CEO successor. He will need it.

Well, now we wont have a news story every time he takes medical leave.

Seriously though, Tim Cook has essentially been in charge the last year or more. I suspect Steve will be advising until he is no longer able to. Other than that, all I can say as a Mac (and now iPhone and iPad) user is, it has been a great decade for us!

I dislike Apple products but he did a wonderful job with Pixar, and with resurrecting Apple after they sacked him and then proceeded to the brink of bankruptcy.

Happy retirement.

x2, i really congratulate his success on the iPod since its the only product ill ever own, and his minimalist design. Hope your doing alright Steve

Poor Steve. He fought his way through cancer and a liver transplant. If he is resigning now, then it must be grim. Love Apple or not, this guy kept working with cancer so he is darned tough. Optimistically, I hope he's incapable of 9-10 hour days and has enough energy to be an effective Chairman of the Board. Realistically, it's hard to see him resign as CEO if prospects weren't bad.

I wish him and his family all the best.

Apple will be fine. Jobs has always been a few steps ahead of everyone and I'm sure succession at Apple has been privately planned since '09. The company will be fine.

At the risk of defeating the filter, F cancer. F it hard. It has taken several beloved people from me. Not to mention one cat I loved. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Yes even if your not a fan of apple products it is still said to see such a man who has has such an influence resign from a company as big as apple. Unfortunately he is balling cancer and may be losing but I agree, I don't feel anyone should have to go through cancer be it themselves or someone they know or love dearly.
