More like over-reviewed. Especially by people coming from other $50-100 budget headphones and being overly vocal about how amazing they are.

only over rated if people say it competes with headphones at about double the price.. at it's price range (it's only $100) i think it's still a very good contender

true but using them on the train with an iphone means the sonic improvements will be marginal because of the source and added outside noise.. so i was just saying that they work ok considering the price and circumstances
 
Anyway I don't know what you prefer but since it's 5+ headphones it may be a good idea to put 100 dollars into getting a baseline with a lower overall quality can - and can just sell them afterwards

The UE6000 which can be had for $85 [not sure if the sale is still on] is a upgraded version of the ATH-M50 in terms of SQ and features but definitely not in build quality

I think we're agreeing because I'm not set on any particular headphone - I just think something accepted around that price range (like the m50 or the u6000) would be good to try with the leftover money
