I've struck out trying to find someplace that still has a forgotten Sennheiser HD565 sitting on the shelf. All my web searches have come up with nothing, just websites that haven't been updated. Anyone have any leads?
None at Sennheiser (tried that already), or at any other web dealer in the US (I tried a search, using a multi-engine search in Copernic, and all the direct inquiries ended with the answer, "No, it's discontinued and we have none left"). So it's down to phoning dealers and seeing if anyone has one gathering dust in the backroom.
No one closer than NYC even carries the good Sennheisers. Thanks, folks.
Joe, it wasn't your post -- but it didn't hurt. Several others have said the same thing, more or less! I want something that doesn't require a dedicated amp to sound great, but anyway, I want to try the damn things before I buy. The only half-way decent cans I can find in stores around here are Grado SR-60/80, and I dont' want them.
Thank goodness for the web, but I'm tired of supporting UPS and FedEx with shipping costs. I hate mass-market stores, but they've killed off local dealers, except for the audio haute couture salons, who, the words of one snotty dealer yesterday, say, "I have never heard a headphone worthy of being carried in our store."
