I've had my Z1R for barely over 5 years now and i've had hear the 109pro in an audio shop a couple of times, but idk if that unit was properly burned in. I like the Z1R sound signature better, and i found the Z1R more technical than the 109pro, of course my time with the 109pro wasn't enough to make a further comparison. Build quality of the Z1R is definitely better. I pair my Z1R with the 1A, but you use the 1Z, maybe ask @Hinomotocho how is the pairing between them. From what i read, it may be too warm for some.

I haven't tried the Meze, or the Shures you've owned to compare.
I get the most use from iems and the IER-Z1R are my favourite tuning. Odd as it may sound, I just re-purchased a mint secondhand MDR-Z1R for mostly movies - I prefer overheads for movies and as I will use every night I could justify the purchase. I do intend to also use for music for a different experience from the IER.
The build quality is top-notch, as you'd expect, and although large are lightweight and comfortable. The soundstage is very good for closed backs I've tried/owned, combined with the clarity and detail makes for a pleasurable listening experience. Some reviews often emphasize the bass, but although it does have great bass I don't find them bass heavy and overpowering the mix at all.
I really like these headphones, and for many recordings they present your music superbly, but there is an aspect that occasionally gets in the way of me loving them. I'm not technical with my listening, so assume from comments that it is that peak (10k?). With some recordings this peak upsets the tone for me, it's not particularly nasty, just can spoil the overall enjoyment for me. I don't want to put you off with this as many others don't seem to be affected by this. I have found if the volume is lowered a bit it can take the edge off it. I'm a direct source listener but could probably remedy this with a tweak of the settings.
I assume intended frequent use for you would be with your 1Z? I always use with a bluetooth reciever for movies or with my TA-ZH1ES. Generally Sony have good synergy, I just tried them with my 1Z and find it a good pairing. There is an opinion that the 1Z is 'warm' but I don't really perceive it this way and find the treble end to balance it out.
Out of interest, did you ever hook the 300Max to the Taz via coax?
I tried this today and was blown away with the difference over USB from Audirvana listening to identical purchased hi-res albums from Qobuz.
I always assumed USB should sound better or am I mistaken?
This is my current EQ for the Z1R. I use it for all songs, all genres - just to brighten things up a tad and thin out any midbass bleed. I love it, and when I got to "direct" I notice the difference immediately.
i’m waiting for my z1r to arrive. i was looking at the kimber cable and every time i see it for sale it’s listed as genuine unboxed (with the same images across multiple sellers).
anyone bought a MUC-B20SB1 recently - are they are genuine?
