Sony X Series Walkman, COWON S9, Apple iPod touch 2G, SanDisk Sansa Fuze Impressions with the Shure E500 / SE530

Yes, that's the one I'm waiting on. I'm a patient man w/ this audio stuff. If the Sony X goes below $200 for the 16GB, I'll grab that. If not, I'll wait til they intro something else w/ the X (S-Master amp) sound.

This one. There's a thread somewhere around here w/ more comments. Ideally I would like to have a larger at least 3.3" touch sensitive screen, but without all those silly features like wifi, noise cancelling, etc.

I owe Techfreakazoid a big thanks for this thread.

I went for the S9 and it has well surpassed my expectations.
The only negative point for me is the UI which wasn't intuitive at
first.

I wanted a portable player I could take around the house - my main
rig is in the office and with having a three year old, the journey from
the office to his bedroom when the monitor started flashing was
becoming a pain.

To be honest, I was expecting to be listening to the S9 and wishing
I was listening through my DacMagic/MPX3 combo but as it happens
I haven't even turned them on since I got the S9.

Now I'm not saying I get better sound quality from the S9 than my
main rig, not at all, however with all things considered I'm happy
for the moment sat in total comfort in my armchair in the living room
or bedroom.

I'm planning to compare the S9 to my main rig this weekend - just to
satisfy my own curiosity and will probably settle with using the main
rig once a week.

As for the S9 itself, I absolutely love it.
The soundstage is enormous, though how much a part the Edition 9's
play in this I'm not sure. The BBE EQ is the best EQ I've ever used on
any component. I've settled (as many others seem to) on Maestro which
fits most of my needs and the sound is rich and engaging with some
serious power behind and no distortion.

I didn't think I could get this sound from a DAP.

Also, after living with the S9 for a couple of weeks I cancelled my
order for the Hifiman HM-801. I figure that between the S9 and my main
rig I've got all bases covered for now

If Fang bows to pressure in the future and includes a decent EQ
with the Hifiman then that will be interesting....

Great thread!Especially since i have the S9.And the few S9 doubters, are the ones that don't have one.It has very strong bass.Fantastic with my HFI-580s and my ALO Mini^3.You have to play around with the EQ to get the sound you want.I finally have the perfect settings.Good highs, fantastic mids, great bass and awesome sound stage. And after firmware upgrades, the sound got even better. Here are my perfect settings(IMO). EQ- 0 1 0 2 3 .(All wide!)BBE 10 ,Mach3Bass 2 or 3(preference),MP on ,3D Surround-off ,Stereo Enhance 6,Reverb-off.With these settings every song sounds right.Especially for the "bass heads"!I and many others initially thought that higher bass settings will produce more and better bass. But it is the almost the opposite at least in the equalizer as shown with my settings.Cowon IMO have the best settable sound enhancements.Especially the S9.

I think most Mp3 players sound bad with normal settings. That's what music enhancement options are for.I don't buy into "if it's not natural and without enhancement",then it's not right.

ROFLMAO ! Native English speakers and Freudians are having a field day with that, JJSoviet !

The RRP on the 32GB S9 is significantly less than the equivalent X, and it plays FLAC natively. If it drives phones like the Edition 9, as indicated, then it seems like a worthy addition to anyone's DAP collection. Go for it.

The S9 drives the Edition 9's perfectly. The combination sounds more like
a desktop rig. No distortion at high volumes and BIG (but still tight) bass.

RRP is recommended retail price. This is the price manufacturers recommend retailers sell their products at.

A big thank you to thathertz and Jodiuh for explaining that more tactfully than I may have.
