Sony WF-1000XM4 Impressions Thread

This is interesting. This morning I got a notification about a firmware update to 1.4.2, it downloaded and seemed to install too, even though I'm mostly sure that I was already on 1.4.2 before. App says it's the latest version.
From time to time the app suddenly decides that the buds are at fw 0.0.0 and so insists on installing the latest even though the buds previously have been updated. It has happend to me both with the XM4 and the Linkbuds S

Agreed. On the latest update to my Linkbuds (the open ring earbuds, not to be confused with LinkBuds S IEMs) I had to update twice. First time fw 0.0.0, then headphones app insisted to update again, which I did and then it changed the version to the latest one for LinkBuds.

Don’t seem to have been released in most locations yet

Not sure about official release, but it's available already, find it attached.

This file can be used with the MDR Proxy tool available on my blog to force the update.

While this is cool, as I read your instructions this will not work for iPhones as it requires a modified Headphones app and this apk file can not be installed on an iPhone but only on Androis devices ?

Indeed, it requires a modified Headphones app, which is doable on Android only.

Maybe it could be done on iOS too, if the iPhone would be jailbroken or something.

As an Android user myself, I forgot that there are iOS users too 😅

I’ll just wait until Sony does an official release, it’s not that I’m missing anything

Sony just releases a new version of Headphones app, after update it then can update the new firmware
Most recent iOS version of the app was 2nd December and that one can’t see 1.6.1 fw (at least in EU)

I can see that for the International version of the buds, the 1.6.1 version is only made available for the E region, as well as for India. For other regions, only 1.4.2 is available.

I forced an update to 1.6.1 using MDR Proxy on my EU buds, and the update was successful and everything seems to work fine.

No, the change log is:

[Update details in version 1.6.1]
[1]
Reduces the burden on the battery.
[2] Reduces the loss of battery capacity due to long-term use.
