Sony PHA-3 balanced portable dac/amp

Hi, Seeking for help.

I bought a used PHA 3. Connected to z7 through normal output and stock z7 cable, everything sounds great. But when I connect z7 with stock balanced cable, I can hear sound distortion if I move the cable from side to side. I thought that there is a problem with the cable and borrowed a kimber cable. But nothing changed, I can still hear distortion, especially If I try to bend the cable. This does not happen with normal (unbalanced) cable.

Does this mean I got a defected amp unit? Is there any way I can check this?

Sounds like a defected amp to me. Is it constant across all digital inputs?

Has anyone compared the sound of the PHA-3 to that of the top-end Sony DAP, the NW-WM1Z? Or its little brother, the NW-WM1A? Any insight would be much appreciated!

The PHA3 is superior sounding to the 1Z. I have both and the PHA3 is better overall in term of sound quality.

What about single ended though?

The 1Z Balanced is better sounding than PHA-3. You buy the PHA-3 because want to utilize its balanced output.

I am surprised....I have never heard a reproducible difference between balanced and single ended, on any system.
