SONY NW-WM1Z M2 / WM1A M2

Although there is an initial firmware update, which I have downloaded, oh my, have Sony got some work to do! It feels like bad beta software. Laggy. Crashes often. Processor can't seem to handle Android 11
Hum... really strange, my WM1ZM2 that I have from beginning of April didn't crash even once and it's not laggy

Glad some positive feedback after that worrying post.

Here's a nice pic from Sato's twitter. https://twitter.com/Hiroaki59612632/status/1535418139801858048?t=IMdZ01b1BrjRmU3RCPnybw&s=19 Noticed an NW-ZX1 next to the NW-WM1ZM2 😀

Maybe I have a bad unit, but I’ve been buying and listening to DAPs for over 10 years. This has the jerky scrolling, flakey connection issues and overwhelmed processor feel of the Pioneers, Onkyos and Fiios I’ve had in the distant past.

I was willing this to be good. I’m a Sony Signature fan, owning both the mdr-1zr and ier-1zr, which I love. But unless Sony can throw some serious resources at least into rapidly bringing the firmware into 2022, what appeared to be a highly promising new product may well fail. That’s just my opinion of course. And it’s still early days, so hopefully they can get it right (or at least significantly improve it).

Another thought is that those few more positive comments seem to be for the ZM2 rather than the AM2 that I have. The ZM2 has double the RAM of the AM2, but not sure about the ROM. Can’t see anything in the specs.

KevP: Are you sure about a bigger RAM with ZM2 compared to AM2?
I have not heard that it would have been the case with M1s.

I mean no offence, but the folks who discussed Android degrading sound quality are the same ones debating which SD cards sound best… 😂🤦‍♂️
you made my day 🙃

KevP: If you mean "RAM" when speaking about "storage capacity on the device itself", then you are right.

According to the specs on the Sony website the ZM2 has 256GB and AM2 has 128GB.
That’s what one call 128GB/256GB ROM. ROM is something used to store music, os, photos, etc. RAM is usually smaller in size and that is the one affecting performance of device. In this case ram should be only affecting device UI performance and not audio. Both walkman sepcs are same other than storage capacity that is ROM.

One question: why is Sony being singled out for releasing an Android DAP (not their first either, might I add)? Why aren't the pitchforks and torches out on all the other Android DAP threads too?

(Sorry, that's two questions) 😏
"fanboys" is the answer my friend.

You are right that what @KevP is referring to isn't RAM, and has nothing to do with overall system performance (unless the read/write speeds were different).

However it should be referred to as storage and not ROM (read only memory can't be written to). Cherrios~

ROM = Read-Only Memory.
If the storage really were ROM, the DAP would have preinstalled music by the producer. Such a music could not have been deleted and replaced by another music.
The DAP internal storage is a kind of SSD, I assume.
