To protect your expensive Walkman investment, I would recommend to use a quality USB charger.

Do USB chargers matter?

https://eepowersolutions.com/wp-con...rger-ripple-current-effect-wp-120619-1-r0.pdf

So far Authentic Apple chargers is a good recommendation as they produce very low ripple, the other recommendation I have is Sony Xperia USB-C chargers.
https://www.chargerlab.com/review-of-new-apple-20w-charger-for-iphone-15-a2940/

For myself, I have been using this USB-C charger for my Walkman:
https://myinnergie.com/sg/product/45h-45w-dual-usbc-usb-power-adapter/

I find the Innergie charger to perform really well, devices stay pretty cool while charging and is pretty fast at charging speed too. It's abit more pricey than other brands but it's by Delta Electronics, the same company that makes industrial server power supplies and also does Apple Mac charger bricks.

Also I would recommend to perform battery calibration once in a while(once a month or so, as per ifixit article) for your Walkman, do note that you have to turn off battery care in settings>battery>battery care to perform proper calibration.

How to perform:
https://www.ifixit.com/Wiki/Battery_Calibration

Another tip for extending battery lifespan, avoid dropping the battery below 20% charge levels(except for calibration purposes), always try to charge up once the Walkman hits 20%. Avoid completely depleting the battery too often. Use battery care setting(which limit charge to 88%) also helps.

Some more tips here(from what it is written, keeping charging temperatures at ambient temp is the big factor for battery lifespan):

The explanations and logic of his recommendations turn out to be much more interesting that I initially thought they would be. Probably because of memories of when I made power cords from a spool of Belden cable. Stiff, teflon insulated, and hard to work with.

The PC chassis info is interesting, but more applicable if using the PC for an audio source. Or for CD ripping.
My current PC, which is fairly old now, uses a Lian Li PC-V700 aluminium case, which has rubber bushing mounts for all HDD , CD-ROM, and all FANs, which provide a level of vibration isolation which is absent from most cases.
I suppose this would be a good option for a PC case for Audio purposes

This is one of my cables. I can't even remember the details of the designs I followed back then.

Sadly we lost him too early. One of the true genius creators of Sony Audio products.

Also here's another one of his audiophile mods:

Copper plate reinforcement to improve the sound of his spike-type racks, also note he uses a kind of (home made?) wooden board as base for his disc player:

yokome.jpg

This time I'll be listening to a BD player, but since the internal functions of the player are separated into the power supply, circuitry, and drive in the left and right directions, I think the main benefit is that these are better separated and the vibrations of each function can be separated. . In other words, I think it's important that the vibration-sensitive drive and power source are placed on the same square piece of wood for the front and back legs.

Of course, digital circuit boards are also sensitive to vibrations...

Note that TAOC's rack receives 6 points, so if you receive all 6 points equally, vertical is intuitively advantageous in terms of strength, but if you lower the two spikes in the center and receive at the four corners, the result is the same. (6-point reception sounded better).

5) Conclusion

I listened to Radiatapine's self-made board for use with a BD player, and it gave me a good impression of the open sound. The results also showed that the direction of the square timbers is better in the front and back.

Also here's another mod from him, use of a type of FR4 tape to dampen vibration of sheet metals and etc:
More than 30 years ago, I discovered that attaching a glass epoxy board with double-sided tape could moderately damp vibrations on surfaces such as sheet metal. At the time, I was designing the CDP-R1 at work, but at home I was buying a kit and assembling a tube amp, but the bonnet was making a lot of noise than I expected, so I was having trouble with it, so I tried various ways to do it. I had the board and double-sided tape lying around, so I used what I had, and I was surprised at how good the sound was.

See the tape on top of this motu 1296:

Changes in sound quality

So what changes with vibration damping using a glass epoxy board?

First, when you hit the frame, it made a "kang" sound, but it changed to a gentle "kong" sound. There is still some resonance, but it's moderate.

So what happened to the playback sound quality?

First, the sound field becomes quieter. The gaps between sounds become clearer, and the separation between instruments improves. The details of your performance will improve. Your sense of rhythm will also improve.

In orchestral music, the woodwinds are better separated and easier to listen to. The snare is also of good quality.

"Oh, doesn't the tone change?" It's not like that. SS-2 is not so strong that you can actually feel its own unique sound, so this is a slightly more advanced topic.

So, the tone doesn't change much. Improves the quality of the sound field. I feel like it makes it easier to see the performance.

Next time I'll be talking about the sound of the double-sided tape I'm currently arranging.

180214-12.jpg

For the preview, I attached it to my PC and listened to the sound from the PC's audio output through the speakers. You may be thinking, "Huh?", but since a PC is not an audio device, the fit of the mold is rather loose, and if you stick double-sided tape on the mold surface, the sound will change drastically. The PC I used was a silver Bio-Z, but the sound quality is relatively good, and the results of this test method are easy to understand.

Well, if you look at it from the perspective of ``can you find something with good sound?'', there is some doubt, but it is easy to ``drop the bad one''. The result is that what is left is good.

For the actual listening, I only want to compare the adhesive part, so the release paper is used as a representative. I used 5015. In other words,
  1. Paste the sample tape
  2. Peel off the release paper
  3. No. Attach 5015 release paper
  4. listen to sound
This is the procedure. The thickness of the glue and the damping power are different, but here we will just listen to the sound quality. The damping force when actually used is adjusted by the area.

2) Listening results

The results are as follows (80 points are the ones I've been using so far).

Product number
score
Quick review
501K
60A little dirty (low level becomes muddy). Slightly slender and hard. The noise of percussion instruments is reduced, but the appearance of the instruments seems to be disjointed.
5015
75It's similar to G9000, but the extension is not as good. The linearity is poor (the damping power for loud sounds is too strong?).
Monotaro
82This is good. It has air, power, depth, and a beautiful voice.

Surprisingly, Monotaro's PB product was the winner .

Just something out of the ordinary. Today I went to purchase a spare battery pack for my vacuum cleaner. The service staff told me something that shouldn’t be affecting lithium ion batteries but here’s what she told me, it is important that for the first two charge of the battery pack to be full 8hour charge followed by full depletion before charging for 8 hours and fully depleted once more. She told me this is to ensure that the battery is fully calibrated to its fullest capacity from the start so that the entire lifespan of the battery is prolonged. She said that after two complete cycles, it is ok to charge and use the battery as per normal.

Though I have no reason to doubt her on that since she deals with repairs on a daily basis and seems to be very knowledgeable about the products in depth. But then again all sorts of strange instructions are given all the time by these service persons.

Service people are inconsistent, and they often give wrong advice. Like an auto store telling me that I should not a larger battery for the car than the one that came with it, otherwise it would burn out the electronics. But the reality is that the manufacturer puts the lowest capacity and cheapest battery in to maximize their profit.

I found some information related to this 8hour rule/myth. Looks like it maybe plausible? Anyway this extra step isn't of any big hassle, "just do as she says" and maybe I will sleep better. Battery Management Systems is yet another Pandora's box full of myths and mysteries.

I work in the solar industry and there are various explainations to how to condition a new bttery.

Personally from my experience this would be my say:

As recommended by the factory, a usual lithium ion battery only needs average 1-3 hours to charge, depending on the battery capacity and charger output current level.

However, why do salesmen/store owners, always ask you to charge your new battery devices for 8 hours?

This is due to a chemical process in the battery called sulfation. In the past, be it any battery, it was prone to sulfation. Sulfation is the process where a layer sulfate grows on the cells, reducing battery life and the ability to hold a higher charge level. This is very prone in lead-acid batteries. It's also occurs in other battery types as well.

Thus back then, it was advisable to charge your new battery for 8 hours. Over charging will remove the sulfation and increase the battery to it's original charge level.

However, batteries today are much more advanced and they have minimised sulfation levels. However, when ever a battery is discharged and not used for a long period of time, sulfation will occur.

If you still don't understand what i'm trying to say, here's a little example.

Example:

You buy an ipod. But you don't know how long the ipod had been sitting in the warehouse for. An un-used battery would always start to discharge naturally into the air or any other means. Thus minimal sulfation might be present in the battery because new batteries are better designed to have minimal sulfation.

Thus it's usually said to charge the battery for 8 hours. Well, my opinion is that take a look at the product recommended time for a full charge, then add another 2-3hours. That should be quite alright for you to condition your battery.

As for me, i usually charge my battery for 12 hours. The battery won't overcharge as the charger would usually cut of the electricity supply to the battery once the batter has sustained a full charge. Quite contradicting, as you may ask, if the charger cuts of supply once full charge, then charging a new battery for 8 hours is useless. I felt that way too. But i did some test on 2 identical batteries. Same batch processed. I charged one for the recommended full charge time as from the manufacturer (about 1-2hours) and i did the myth charge time(8 hours) for the other.

My results showed that the battery that had been charged for 8 hours lasted significantly longer than the battery that was charged at the recommended charge time period of 1-2 hours.

All the tests we ensured fair with a control setup as well. The battery charged for 8 hours reaped in an hour more in usage time compared to the other battery. The battery used was a lithium ion battery. Those used in your ipods, music devices, handphones, etc.

So for me, it does conclude my questions. As for the rest, it can be up to personal preferance as to how long you would like to charge the new battery.

There is no need to be full 8hours charge.
Just needs to charge the batt to 100% and deplete it to almost 0% for first 2 cycle. (Do not charge during this interval)
Occasionally, factory reset your devise to recalibrate it.

In fact, we should change to a larger battery.

I have problem. When I received Walkman I connected it via USB to my PC Win 10 enterprise 2021, and downloaded 180Gb music. It was working perfect. After some time I connected again, but Walkman do not recognises PC, and PC do not recognises Walkman. Made many attempts with different cable, OS, computers. Nothing helps. After I made factory reset, and it delete all my data and music. I connected with my PC and it recognises Walkman. I downloaded all my files again. But when I tied to connect it after 2 hours problem come back, computer do not see walkman and walkman do not see computer. I made factory reset again, but this not helps anymore. Problem remains. Maybe anyone has some simmilar situation?

Maybe this tool can give you some insight to see if your Walkman is detected at the USB controller Device root hub side: https://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtreeview_e.html
