Sony MDR-Z7M2 Headphone Thread

Came here after seeing the Addicted to Audio sale :atm:

Can anyone do a 3-way comparison between Z7 mk2, Z1R, and Verum 1? Want to find out about their sound signatures, tonal balance and timbre quality.

I mostly listen to pop, rock. My headphones amp is Loxjie P20, which has a high-Z balanced out. Thanks!

Can't help you with the Vellum, but here is my comparison of the other two: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/sony-mdr-z7m2-headphone-thread.886123/page-24#post-14615878

Mate, there is a reason why they are discounted to $438 AUD (294 USD). Do yourself a favour and listen to them before you buy them or should I say not buy them.

They just have some stocks want to get rid of. z7m2 in AU didn’t sell well. I have talked to some friends working in Sony said $438 is far below the whole sale price.

I just purchased one from local Sony store with price match plus Amex 500-150 deal for a good no brain bargain. But the sound from z7m2 is really narrow after i listen on wm1a. Other two headphone /earphone I have is HD800s and m9. I quite like m9 compare with z7m2.

Hi @oldmate I totally get what you're saying. At that price point, it'd be hard to find a pair of closed back full size cans from any manufacturer, that matches the build quality of the z7m2.

I'm looking at closed cans for use in the open plan office. My entire collection is open back so something different would be nice.

@Jackotman which Sony store in Sydney? Do they have demo units? Too bad I don't have amex

I think there are Sony kiosk in Chatswood, parramatta and castle hill. They can do price match without any drama. Of course, it is all brand new not demo unit. If they out of stock, Sony kiosk can make special order for you. Just for your info, addicted audio is Sony authorised dealer.

Looking at cable options on ebay / aliexpress. There aren't many choices it seems.

Any recommendations for balanced cables either XLR or 2.5mm? I've no plan to go 4.4mm.

Maybe I missed it (long thread), but has anybody compared these against the flagship Z1R? I have these Z7M2s and I like them. Just wondering if the Z1R are any better or if it's snake oil.

A lot depends on your ears. See this post: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/sony-mdr-z7m2-headphone-thread.886123/page-24#post-14615878

I seem to be the only one mentioning the Z1R in this thread. That may be because it's in a different price class. A very different price class. And IMHO not worth it.

I might just have to buy a pair from a place that accepts returns because it's hard to hear a chart lol.

It's hard to hear how other people process sound too, so it's best to hear for yourself. But once you've found cans you like, comparing their graph with others can be useful.

Sony not a snake oil company, all different class device selling at the the right price they demanded. And it all depend on your ears and the player you have to make it difference.

Don't expect to use any cellphone, or a cheap dap, cheap CD player to make Z1R sing. Which mean Z1R need more expensive device to run it better, something like WM1Z, DMP-Z1, Paw Gold/Gold Touch, SP1000 and so on..

Is there any evidence that all of these are not snake oil? Like measurements or blind a/b testing against cheap atom?
Cheap atom? OMG unbelievable, ok not another word from me.
