Sony MDR-R10 Owner's Club

Just for the record... I found out that my R10 (SN# in the upper 100s) drivers are #3.
This happens to match with Mikhail's quote, which states that the 3 would be the earliest driver.

I'm not sure, but I think that if we start mapping the serial numbers vs. the driver numbers, we may find some logic/relationship behind it.

How much foam is there for each driver? Is it just the one round piece or is there some inside behind the driver?

They sell both smaller (white/yellow) and larger foam (black) rings as a set. Not cheap at around $200ish. You get bigger discount if you order the earpads as well.

I have seen the light colored foam rings but where do the others go?

Are the keys to the case unique? When the item was shipped to me, customs opened the case, but locked it with the keys inside. Don’t want to damage the case.

I bought my ES R10 from them and yes, they seem to have the best quality and the right parts.

The black larger foam goes under the metal frame in each ear cup.

Keys just loose in the box, to cannonball around those delicate wood cups!?
I hate customs. They dropped my T2 on its corner, bending the heatsink fin (USA / Canada).

Wouldn't you be entitled to compensation for the repair/replacement of the fin?
That didn't happen to my T2 but I can sense the pain you're going through.
Kinda like how all guy know how it feel when they witness someone get kicked in the nut sack.

I got my R10s. The foam was in horrible condition, worthless. No bass etc. and a real mess to clean up, all sticky and gooey.

Over the year, my R10 has degraded similarly. I doubt many people have really heard what the R10 can really do given that each unit will sound varies depending on the driver number and the condition of larger and smaller foam rings. Once the foam rings have been replaced, the OG R10 is nothing but stellar sounding to my ears.

Hi just saw a comment over at the W2020 thread, claim it to be the best sounding closed headphone ever.
Anyone here heard the W2020 side by side with King?
