believers or non-believers, the cable with volume control and the one that doesnt have a volume control makes the 1R less or more bassy respectively. i also gave that test to 3 of my friends at different places without them knowing whats in it, and their comments are one and the same--- "what happened with the bass?" is their impression.

one of my friends mentioned that maybe the resistors inside the volume control makes it less bassy, assuming both cables have the same gauge.

The "volume control" is simply a switch, wired to control volume settings on the player itself. Most likely the control version have thinner wire to carry the extra microphone line without changing diameter.

Anyone know where i can demo a set of MDR 1NC in London?

I called up the SONY store in Tottenham court road yesterday and asked if they have a demo set. The lady said "No, it would be unhygienic". I almost dropped the telephone. When I pointed out that there were numerous places demoing headphones she then changed tact and said they were very expensive and they would not be able to sell a demo pair so would lose a lot of money, so I would not be able to try before I buy.

Anyway, the reason I'm asking is that HMV has the NC for £239 and the standard model for £179.

The Sony store in Tottenham court road have a demo pair of MDR-1R and MDR-1BT, in fact I was the one asked them to open that the MDR-1R. They don't seems to want anyone trying out the NC model for some strange reason.

Thanks, yes, it was that Sony centre I called. HMV also have the 1R on display. I really want to try out the NC as I have the M4U 2s and the NC isn't that great (It is ok though) so I wanted to see how the Sony compared. £239 is about the cheapest I've seen for these, and I would buy if HMV allowed returns (even with a restocking fee) but they only provide store credit in these cases.

EDIT: Wow, SoundAndVision really didn't like the NC version here

A couple of users posting here expressed the same concern, NC version even with NC off does not sound the same as plain MDR-1R. Whether you like the difference or not is another question, seems like most don't.

Ive noticed that it seems like very many in Norway look at Sony as some mass electronic brand that not make anything really good. So people tend to not even look at a headphone if it is from Sony. Its bad since really got some good models that gets out now and then, like the mdr-1r. I can see on the sites here that they never sell anything compared to other brands in the same price range.

What's so funny about that? I've heard differences between cables in the past and not talking $1 vs $100 cables but a stock thick cable vs a very thin cable (think FiiO amp included cables). :p

Stock thick Q40 cable -> warmer, a bit smeared sounding
Monoprice very thin cable -> very slightly brighter, less smeared sounding, tiny bit more pronounced bass

Thick versus thin could have very small differences due to differing cable impedances. A thinner cable has a higher electrical impedance.

Yea I know. It was the case in this case as the volume was like slightly different at least 1% on the windows volume slider had to be adjusted between the cables to get somewhat similar volume.
