Bump 2014 and they still hold up very well. But you can certainly argue that they are disqualified due to not isolating all that well :)

Bump. End of 2014. :)

I bought my Sony MDR-CD3000 for around $400 back in 1990 or 1991.   Yes, 23 years ago.

Still love them.  I recently gave it a mini face-lift. (new earpads, headband)  I've always kept
the MDR-CD3000 in its original huge hard case.   However, the original earpads and headband
started to flake in the last few years. (but considering the age, not surprising)

I cannot believe that I'm still using them on a regular basis.  I've owned many other big headphones
over the 23 years.  My most recent purchases were the Sennheiser HD598($99) and HD600($264),
thanks to Cyber Monday sale on Amazon.   Yet I'm still going back to the MDR-CD3000 frequently.
For many vocal and classical pieces, they just sound natural and sweet.

To be honest, I will never let go of them, even if someone offers me $200 or more.

I regret selling my cd3000 as well. I still have the cd1700 and it walks over the hd 598 in a direct comparison. Wish that I still keep the cd3000.

Hello to you
I'll be happy to know the characteristics of SONY MDR-CD3000 in
sound stage depth
Timber
bass, treble
compared to HD800

Thank you all

I will not give a real comparison because it´s way to long since I sold the HD 800 but yes CD 3000 somehow felt very close in character. Maybe even kloser then K701. HD 800 being more open of course and going a bit deeper but even the CD 3K is really airy. Mind you my ear pads are worn and my headband is justabout totally killed so I have no clamping/more distance to drivers and more air leakage and more open sound.

Btw purk where do you find that new headband? Is it hard to install?
