I've been planning on buying a set of closed cans for a while. I was wondering if I found a good deal on a pair of CD3000's would they still be better than say a Denon D2000/5000/7000 or Audio Techinicas etc.. Amp and source issues aside are they still the best closed cans for under $1,000? Thanks
Best closed headphones I heard to date. Definitely kills the Denon I had, and the ESW10JPN as well. But in the wrong system it may sound a bit too bright.
I guess it is just a matter of taste really.

There's a comparison with the D5000's, they get 5 points for sound quality whereas the CD3000's get 4.5 points ƒwƒbƒhƒzƒ“ SONY MDR-CD3000
I would give 2.5 out of 5 for the Denon, only liked it because it was my first headphone and didn't hear others.
The Sony has a much nicer midrange, higher detail level, clearer bass and a much bigger soundstage.
You can try the Ultrasone Pro/PL-650, but they will be a little bit more aggressive compare to the CD3000. The second option will be the GMP 8.35 with the newer pads, more natural and balanced. Both hps, have a very good sound stage compare to the CD3000.
I fund the CD3000 to be very sweet and polite, and I like it a lot.

hah, he even rates the Proline750 higher than the cd3k
I know someone who owns a cd3k and found the Proline2500(opened version of the 750) just as good as his cd3k...so indeed, we all hear differently.
I tried a Proline750, and even for $20 I wouldn't have bought it..and several ppl complained that the cd3k sounded like noise coming from a "hole"
I guess we all have different ear shapes and different tastes! Some european site tested the Denon D1001, and said that the V shaped EQ was overwhelming and totally unbearable...much like the DT770Pro/80, which is a bass fart machine basically? and yet, many ppl rate it highly...hell, even Larry pimps them w/ wooden cups for a stellar markup.
It's said that ppl in the US like very bright videoprojectors(even if it kills the contrast ratio, like the HC1500/1600 when they market the HC1100 in Europe/Asia) and V-EQ shaped headphones(D1001/DT770Pro/etc)...Buying headphones based on testimonials from an internet forum is prone to fail.
This said, if the cd3k is to your taste, you'll have a hard time finding anything above of it for an acceptable price IMHO....PRAT is fantastic, SS is out of this world(it's clearly the SS sugar daddy), it's very detailed yet not too analyzing..SONY did good w/ these drivers
I paid $398 USD from Audiocubes back in 2003 and sold them a year ago for about the same. I found them to be very comfortable with a big soundstage. Nice center image. A slight tendency toward being bright and decent bass but not a lot of it. Overall, I liked them a lot. I like my current cans better though. I also liked the Edition 9 better for its bass and almost speaker like imaging but it was not comfortable at all so I sold them last week. I'm not sure what the CD3000 is going for on the used market but if you get it for around $400 I think its still a good buy. I wasn't that impressed with the D5000.
so I take it the HD800 kills it? anyway, -properly amped- the cd1k/cd3k(same drivers) are PRAT killing machines, the imaging and instruments separation is just eye popping
