I have no idea how much these go for and I found one in great shape nearby. I took some time listening to it today, and while it sounded great, I don't know if the asking price was fair. Nor am I entirely sure I want to get back to headphones just quite yet.

I did a search in the FS forums here but no price was given. Anyone have a decent estimate?

I think the last pair went for $500 shipped (just a couple days ago). Pricing on these rare cans is always a "can of worms" (mind the pun). For example, around a year ago a W11JPN would fetch $600-$700. I think that price is fair for the sound and exclusivity you get, some think it a lot. Nowadays though I think they'd easily fetch $1000+. All a question of demand.

I'm of the opinion that the VTG is the best sounding ATH woody short of the L3000, so I believe that as more people hear them, the price will continue to rise. However, they are hit or miss. Some are great, some not so much.

One of the good ones will easily fetch $500+, as is evident by the sale the other day.

Agreed with grawk that the W10VTG is a great sounding can and is in my current rotation of cans for listening sessions. Price of the VTG will depend on it's condition. IMO near mint condition ones with it's original box will fetch $500 or near to that. VTGs that looks like they have been beaten up with major blemishes on it wood enclosures, worn out 3D wing support pads and or earpads will command less.

Part of the reason why they command such a price is because of it's rarity. It's the first set of woodies made by AT and near mint condition ones are hard to come by.

yeah, i saw those W10s in the FS forum...and they went for around $500...last year or two years ago a pair went for $275 so they're really going up in price. IMO they may not sound better but their rarity demands the steep increases in price...

As far as which of the AT-W series sounds the best irregardless of collectibilty, IMO it would be a toss up between the W10VTG and the W11JPN. Closely followed by the W10LTD and W11R in no particular order. I haven't had the opportunity to audition a pair of W5000 so I don't know how they fair against the the other AT-W cans.

i've never even heard of the W11R. What is the chronological order of the wooden AT phones. is the below right. where do the W11Rs fall and although not woody when did the L3000 and AD2000 come out as well - where would they each fall in the list, time wise.

- W10VTG (1996)
- W10LTD (1997)
- W11JPN (1998)
- W100 (1999)
- W11R (2000)
- W2002 (2001)
- W1000 (2002)
- L3000 (2003)
- W5000 (2005)

edit: fixed list.

Be careful.

I have heard one pair of W10VTG's sound absolutely wonderful - the best A-T can I've heard. But I have also heard another W10VTG sample not sound nearly so good, nor as desirable.

I cannot account for the variation, but several people have heard them & the difference *shrug*.
