what is the difference between the 440 and 840 pads? Different material? They look the same.

They're made out of a material that's much much softer, are padded better, have a different "screen" (the part that protects the driver from your ears). I can assure you, they're not the same in the slightest bit. The first thing i did when I got my 440's was throw the stock pads in the trash because that's where they belong.

i'll trust you and get a pair of the 840 pads. i really am happy with my 440s, but how can i say "no" to an improvement? thanks for the tip.

There's an interesting read for you, it's an interview with Matt Engstrom who's one of the lead engineers at Shure product development. Just in case you had any doubts the 840 pads were an improvement to the 440's, this is straight from the horses mouth.
