what do you guys think for general use with an ipod?

haarism: Any iPod can drive SHR440 easily. Just use the search button, there are a lot of threads with plenty of information about exactly what you asked.

Not the best. They are lean headphones in general, but without substantial power, it's even worse. I know they're rated at 44 ohms and an iPod can supposedly put out 65 ohms. I don't care what the numbers say. I own them and can tell you they're not the best.
 
If you're looking to buy the Shures, I'd recommend the Denon AH-D1001 instead. Much easier to drive and they have a more pleasant sound anyway.
