Shure SRH1540 Review

  Hi !
I've saw this headphones and the HD700, I can't really choose between them (one is closed and the other is open)
What is your point of view between those to ?

Thank you

Depends. The HD700 is definitely technically superior, but is harsher in tuning. If you're into a warmer sound, the shures will fit better.

How do these compare to the Oppo PM-3 or Beyerdynamic DT-1770? Do they have a better seal on your ears than the V-Moda M-100?

All signs seem to point to that being true. If these companies start making headphones with their own DAC's, it's going to be a marvelous future for audiophiles.

I hope not. I have my own DAC's already.

How does the Shure SRH 1540 sound against the B&W P9 and the AKG K872?

No idea about the AKG's but the 1540's are definitely better and a hell of a lot cheaper than the P9's. The P9's have a mid bass hump that ruins everything. And the 1540's have a bigger and better soundstage and are more comfortable. The P9's are built very well, are comfortable but very heavy, and are absolutely gorgeous to look at. But I can't justify $900 and then still have to EQ the sound. I sent mine back after 1 week. That said, I'm still waiting for B & W to release the lightning cable and get some reviews to see if it improves their sound and tames the mid bass hump.

That won't affect you then. That's like saying I don't want Baskin Robins to start making cheesecake ice cream because you already have some in your fridge. But maybe other people want to amplify their headphones without all the bulk of an external DAC and Amp. Getting them built in to the cable like Audeze's Cipher cable just expands portability to higher end headphones that usually would have to stay home.

these came up while searching for a closed hd-650 which they get often compared to apparently.now conisdering along with dt-1770's, viso hd50, meze 99, and thx-00.

also how much do they improve when using an amp?

I think they improved a bit when I changed from my Macbook Pro to a Chord Mojo, but nothing dramatic. They can clearly be used directly from a computer or a phone.

I agree completely. I hear a lot of people say the 1540's don't scale as well as other phones but that's not true. The difference is simply that the 1540's already sound awesome straight from a phone or portable device.

I've never heard the meze 99 or thx-00, but the 1540's obliterate the hp-50's and are better than the 1770's. I liked the 1770's but they weren't as comfortable as the Shure's, they had a smaller soundstage, a strange sounding mid range, and the highs can get hot on some tracks. So I ended up sending them back. My 1540's are still my go to everyday closed headphones. YMMV.

just ordered on b&h for 499 no tax + free shipping. based on what I'm reading I'm gonna want to get a dac/amp though for now don't want to spend more than ~100.

is the monoprice dac/amp combo going to drive/clear things up with this? or am I better off with a fulla 2 (maybe schiit stack for 200). first time delving into this type of gear.

needless to say i'm pretty excited after a few failed attempts at trying IEMs.
