Shure SRH1540 Review

I finally picked up a pair of 1540s with black Dragon cable.I couldnt pass them up at $350. I'll stick with my hd800s for quiet listening though. I paired the 1540s with a Sony zx1 for mobile use and use them on a Burson conductor with es 9018 dac at home. I'll review them soon.

Yeah can't really compared 1540s to the 800. 1540 is meant for portable listening or for those needing a bit of isolation(or those who like colored sound). HD800 is pretty much unbeatable for home/reference use. I sold my 1540 after about 6 months, but I've had the HD800 for almost two years now.

I found the same; the cables that came with it were too long for my needs.

Been using this cable since Jan and haven't touched the others since. Ignore the comments about improved SQ - it sounds exactly the same - but is far shorter and the braiding is nice.

Thanks very much for this :)

I ordered one and it arrived today.  Its much more suitable for me at my desk than the standard cable.

Only for around a month now.  I really get along with them in terms of sound & comfort but that cable was just really awkward in terms of length and thickness.

I actually found a guy in china who makes a cable with a mic too so I ordered one of them and ill wait the 30 days for it to arrive and see how it goes :)

I mostly wear them at my desk in work, and since I have to do the occasional skype call it might be nice to have a cable with a mic in it for that too..

Just got the SRH-1540. Can anybody recommend pads that would improve mids and tame bass bloat without sacrificing attack? I already tried the Shures with Brainwavz HM5 velour pads and while the midrange clarity improved the bass totally lost punch. I'm thinking about 1840 velour pads but I'm not sure if they would be much different from HM5.

Not personally listened to the Z7, i would like to check them out though.
I really like the 1540 as do most of my pals who have checked them out. I find that bass can be overdone on these, you should hear it on becks sea change on CD from the fostex hp-a8. Too much really, a better more balanced sound from T-90 and icon audio hp8. However comfort and mids are strong.

I've heard similar sentiments that there's not a lot between the 1540s and the Z7s. I use closed 'phones mainly, as I take them to the office, to coffee bars, out and about most places pretty much, and my 1540s fit the bill. Of course always keeping one eye out for a potential "upgrade", but I don't think the Z7 is that. An alternative maybe, but not an upgrade. Have you heard both, GoodGucci?
