Shure SE846 Impressions Thread
Jan 28, 2017 at 4:56 AM Post #17,087 of 22,945
I'm currently listening to the SE846 with my XDP-300R which has an output impedance of 16 ohms. Whats the downside of this, considering the SE846 should be paired with a device with less than 1 ohm output impedance? How is the sound affected? And could damage occur to either the IEMs or the player when using them together?

The background is totally black when using the SE846 with the XDP-300R.

Where did you find this output impedance figure? I find it very hard to believe.

You mean that the output impedance of the 300R being 16 ohms? Or that the preferred output impedance for the SE846s being less than 1 ohm?

This is from the 300R specs:

Applicable impedanceUnbalanced: 16 Ω to 300 Ω
Balanced: 32 Ω to 600 Ω

This is better perhaps =). Am I understanding this all wrong?

You are understanding it all wrong. There's nothing about output impedance there. The suggested 16 to 300 ohms is just an arbitrary guide to the impedance of the headphones you should pair it it with. I say arbitrary because you see exactly the same numbers listed on lots of players even where the output impedance is close to zero.

Hello,
I think this document tells us that it's best suited with 16 to 300 ohms headphone. The real output impedance should be less than 4 ohms.
With a low impedance IME like SE846, the main effect will be a treble roll-off, but if you are satisfied with the result, all is OK !

You have to listen to compare different dac amps. The impedience is one factor but so is archetecture and chip choice. It all leads to different flavours and tip choices. One effect of high impedience is possible flabby bass and a thin upper mid, but that depends. I'd suggest Hugo 2 is worthy of a listen, given credit card balance.

With high output impedance, these earphones are not good. You get a large dip in the high mids/highs. Try and find my post in this thread, I made a graph to show the effect of different impedances. Sorry... On my phone and too lazy to do it myself :D
