1. Your source matters here. Are you prepared to buy additional equipment besides the headphone?
2. What kind of sound are you looking for? These are not similar cans in my opinion (I have both, mind you).
3. Do you need isolation?
Actaully, I was thinking that the leakage from the 650s would be a problem.
I am also going to buy a 200 dollar tube amp as well.
I feel like the D2000s are more reference headphones.
I mostly listen to everything and a little bit of gaming.
My source is 80% my Macbook Pro, 10% is my iPhone, the other 10% is my gaming computer.
D2000s might as well be labeled semi-open with their (lack of) isolation. It's pretty amazing that their bass is able to reach so low without such a good isolation as well.
D2000s can play nice with a tube amp, it makes their-- at times-- shrill highs lesser, and brings out their mids-- which can be recessed at times as well.
If the HD650's bass is as akin to the DT990s bass as people say it is, it's definitely not a deeply extending enough bass for me. The D2000's bass is perfect to me, but the HD650 probably wins out from time to time for being crisper with its open backing allowing for a more natural decay.
