The Q1 destroys the myth

Owning the Q1 for over a month now I can say it is the best sounding DAP I have ever owned. Shockingly it is the cheapest DAP I have ever owned getting it on sale for less than the M0 cost me. The assumption use to be the more you spend the better the sound quality for the most part or so it should be. Not the case with the Q1 for sure, number two would be the much more expensive Fiio M9. But it would seem you are paying more for the features than the sound quality for the M9.

I honestly can't think of any feature I need that the Q1 does not offer. Sure functionality can still be improved but so far every feature does work adequately to make the Q1 entirely usable. It makes me wonder if I will ever buy another $300+ DAP again. My Q1 will be the baseline for every DAP I buy in the future so keep the MTouch based units coming Shanling.

Q1 is amazing, only the touch control could be better.
Soundwise and userwise my Hiby R3 Pro is much better, but it is also much more expensive.

I have demoed the Hiby R3 Pro and it does sound good but I found the soundstage lacking compared to the Q1 single ended of course since Q1 does not offer a balanced output. I find the soundstage wider and deeper than the Hiby especially after a thorough burn in of the Q1 as the R3 Pro soundstage seemed to lack depth. In fairness the R3 Pro was an instore demo model so not sure how much it was burned in before demo. Yes I would give the nod to Hiby for the OS but I have to say that the MTouch has come a long way since the M0 which I also owned. I am hoping Shanling will keep improving the MTouch OS going forward. But for the price paid the Q1 is pretty damn awesome. At the time of demo the R3 Pro was $225 CDN more than the Q1. At that price I would have taken my Fiio M9 over the R3 Pro and it was actually $70.00 less than the R3 Pro.

It is clear from reviews that the R3 Pro needs to be used balanced to really shine. I don't have any balanced headphones so another reason not spend more on the R3 Pro.

Maybe a matter of synergy, but IMO the soundtage in HiBy is better, wider with better instrument positioning.

Still Q1 is perfect for sports or in a car.

The Q1 with my NAD Viso HP50's is a match made in heaven for my ears so they definitely have great synergy.

Again are we talking SE or balanced for the R3 Pro, only reviews that I have read that say the R3 Pro sounds as good or slightly better than the Q1 is via balanced output? Twister6 review - Q1 vs Hiby R3 Pro – "in this comparison if you look at 3.5mm port of R3 Pro, its sound has narrower soundstage and less expanded dynamics, but when you switch to its 2.5mm balanced output, the soundstage width and vertical dynamics expansion of R3 Pro is on the same level as Q1". This was my conclusion as well after my demo of the R3 Pro minus the balanced output which I could not demo.

Compared to the Fiio DAP's I haved owned or demoed M7/M9/M11 you would have to step up to the M11 to find one that sounds better than the Q1 via SE. I demoed the R3 Pro for about 45 minutes via multiple genres and file formats. I am using headphones exclusively so I can't say for sure if it would be the same with iem's.

Yeah, the balanced in R3 Pro is a magic sound. SE is still very nice though.
With my Earsonics ES3 and ex-Fiio FA1 the SE of Hiby was comparable to Q1, I like R3 Pro more due to less warm sound.
R3 Pro though BAL output is IMO better in almost every aspect.

A little change of topic. Does any armband for Q1 exist?

We never made one(mainly due to the weight). Not sure if there is some exactly fitting third party or if you would need to get some random phone/player holder.

Yeah that would be the no go for me, needing a balanced output to get the best sound. The Fiio M9 has balanced output but it apparently sounds the same SE and balanced, just a little more power through balanced. So my goal is always to find the best sounding DAP SE only which rules out alot of models these days. Since only a small percentage of people at least that I know go balanced on their DAP's manufacturers should really try to still tune their DAP's to sound just as good through SE. Reserve balanced for those with demanding headphones. Also since most dual DAC DAP's only utilize the second DAC via balanced output it isn't worth paying more for dual DAC's either.

I tried a make shift solution, I tried using a small camera bag from an old digital camera to carry it. I tried attaching it to my arm looping it around a neoprene sleeve. The problem is the Q1 is so heavy it is really hard for it to stay in place and it would slide down my arm and of course you have to take it out of the bag to use it. So not really practical to jog with it, I thought about getting a fanny pack and just carrying it in that but have not tried that yet. I do have a small shoulder satchel I carry my DAP's and my NAD Viso HP50's in when I travel.

If you don't mind looking silly you could get one of those baby carriers people use to carry babies on their chests :baby:

You really need a secondary unit like the M0 or one of the small Fiio DAP's for jogging as the Q1 really is to heavy to wear in a practical fashion.

My Q1 is now playing for 20-30 seconds and then shutting down.

Any suggestions?

How old is your unit?

I would try a factory reset if you can

Does the unit charge properly?

How much battery life do you have? If you can, drain the battery and recharge fully.
