Shanling M6 PRO - New version coming Summer 2021
Sep 4, 2023 at 3:16 PM Post #931 of 959
Old versions of M6 are not getting any upgrade to higher Android. Would have to buy M6 Ultra instead.
Hey @Shanling - that's totally lame: a ≥ $700 device that was already limited by a dated version of Android when released, which Shanling won't update, and you're suggesting customers spend another ≥ $800 to get modern versions of Android that should be supported on the device they already paid for?

I'm sorry, as a small brand we are limited in what Android system upgrades we are able to provide on our devices depending on the CPU platform used.

Good day to all in the thread.

I would like to ask if the M6 Pro 21 has the option to limit battery charge to increase the DAP lifespan.
No, we do not have such option in the system.

Edit Sep 28/2023: won't play 24/96 FLAC again and still won't play MQA in beta 2.91.0. For some reason plays 24/192 FLAC only. Same behavior in newer beta 2.91.1 Reverted back to 2.86.

Anyone else with an M6 Pro 21 or M6 21 tried the latest Tidal beta 2.91? I installed it on my Pro 21 and the FLAC now plays fine but MQA tracks won't play.
Whenever I catch an MQA track, it won't start play or just comes on for a split second and the sample rate readout kind of flickers on and off.

Not sure what the issue is. I don't think it's Android 7.1.1. because I have an older Acer tablet with straight Android 7 that plays everything perfectly in the beta app, FLAC and MQA. The only difference between the two gadgets is that Acer simply unfolds the MQA in software while the Pro 21 attempts the full 16X hardware decoding and for some reason, in the 2.91 beta, fails at it.

Just curious if anyone else had experienced this. I guess it's possible it'll be fixed in the official update.

Our software team is working on fix for this, should be coming quite soon.

With Tidal Max release, Tidal changed how some of their files behave, causing issues with our custom Android Music processing.

Hello Shanling!
I would like to ask you:
1) Will the ESS Saber 9068AS DAC be better than the ESS Saber 9028Pro?
2) Why do you use BUF 634A in Shanling M6Pro 21? It's bad for music. Or I'm wrong?
3) I had a Shanling M6Pro player on 4497EQ. Its power is 600 mW, the comfortable sound level is approximately 35%. But when I bought Shanling M6Pro 21, I had to increase the sound level at the same tube gain by more than 40%. This is fine? After all, the 21-year-old version is more powerful.
4) Will the sound through a USB DAC be worse than through the player itself?
Thank you.

1) Maybe, depends which devices are you comparing.
2) Why do you think it's bad for Music? It's a component we use in quite a few of our machines and we like their sound.
3) Volume levels settings differ between devices, it doesn't match 1:1 between devices.
4) Depends on your setup (computer, its ports, software used, processes running, USB Cable, USB clean power, used DSP or upsampling etc). Sound from Shanling app run directly on M6 will be of constant quality.

Hi @Shanling --Just wondering if there is any update on the fix?

We now have M3X firmware in beta testing, which seems to be fixing all the Tidal playback issues. So M6 update should be coming soon.

Which filter is better to use:
Linear-phase fast roll-off filter or
Minimum phase slow roll-off filter or
Hybrid fast roll-off filter?
What are the features of the implementation of filters in this player? It seems to me that Hybrid fast roll-off filter is the golden mean?

Do these filters work in mode USB - DAC?

This is very personal and up to your preferences. If you like Hybrid, use that one.

Filters are a core part of how the DACs work, so they apply no matter what mode of play you use.

Firmware Update released

Full notes and download link on website:

https://en.shanling.com/article-AndrUpdOct23.html

At this time OTA update is not available, please proceed with manual update.
Tested the new 1.29 firmware on M6 Pro 21 with Tidal app 2.91.1.1136.12854

Note: These are my results and others may be totally different.

--FLAC is good 24/96 and 24/192. Strangely these were working before in 1.26 but if I let machine sit unused for a week or so FLAC stops working.

--MQA actually will play BUT not listenable as there are constant constant static-like pops as the song proceeds. On 1.26 firmware the scroll would just stop and start and only occasional fragments of song would be heard--now it plays but with constant static-like pops. I can't test every MQA track on Tidal but I tested several and results were all the same for me.

I also tested on the very latest Tidal beta 2.92.0.1138.12919 and got same results. I also tried to go single DAC but results the same as dual.

* Before install of the new Tidal apps I deleted the cache and app settings of the current Tidal app and uninstalled, then installed a new one fresh.

Next step will be a factory reset and see if it may have corrected.

EDIT: Factory reset (oy, what a fun experience!) and result is the same as above. As far as I can tell, nothing is fixed for me in Tidal with 1.29 update--FLAC plays, at least for now, but MQA is not listenable. YMMV as usual, love to hear others experiences. This was with Tidal app 2.91.1.1136.12854 and beta 2.92.0.1138.12919. Back to Tidal V2.86.

This is noted directly in the Update notes on our website, some MQA files will not play correctly.

No need to do factory resets, this is issue between our system and Tidal app, so far no fix for it.

To provide more details on this:

With Tidal Max update in August, their app significantly changed how it delivers the data in max setting. It completely messed the previous system setup for their MQA playback. Our software team had to adjust it significantly to get the Tidal Max working again. In our testing it should now work fine with all the proper Flac Hi-Res files and MQA files that are not unfolding (play at either 44.1 or 48kHz). Unfortunately the MQA files that are unfolding (play at 384 khz, 705, etc) are playing with artifacts in sound and our software team is still working on fix for these, as they now behave differently than before the Max Update.
