including control of Tidal streaming from M5S?
No, only for the local playback.
But if you are using Tidal, you are running on Wi-Fi, at which point you can use DLNA and stream from your phone directly to M5s.

Have the M5S in hand now, updated MQA firmware. Now streaming Tidal Hifi MQA tracks Any indication in M5S's Tidal native player that MQA is fully decoded? Or it's just for local MQA tracks?

MQA is supported for Tidal and it shows "MQA Studio" when you are playing MQA files.
Please make sure to change the Tidal quality to Master setting. To change setting, click on the album art, it will show Normal/High/HiFi/Master, click on it and it will take you to setting where you can set the streaming quality setting.

I just updated to 4.0. My wheel which has been working perfectly is now wonky as all get out. The wheel now jumps ahead several number for only one click. When going backwards it will even skip forward instead of backwards. Is there a copy of the previous firmware that I can hopefully downgrade my firmware to and get my reliable M5 back again. Did the sound signature change?

Older firmwares are available on download page: https://en.shanling.com/download/57
Please test it out, if older firmware will change behavior of wheel.
We do not adjust sound with Firmware updates.

@Shanling want to report another firmware 4 bug. Now when I press the Album icon, the system freezes for about 60 seconds, then loads. Playlist, artist, folder all load fine. After 60 seconds all icons works and I can go back to files or artists. Press album again, and system freeze. Downgraded to 3.7 problem gone. Re upgraded with tf card and problem back. Down grade and fine..... I think there's a bug to be fixed. Hope my description helps.

Found also this bug: play modes Repeat Track, Shuffle and Repeat All are doesn't works. Instead, follows up with next folder. FW V4.0.

We are aware of this issue and software team is working on fix.

Tested this and seeing no issues.
Track repeat and shuffle working as they should.
Repeat all, if used in folder browsing mode, you need to have folder skip turned off.

Seriously thinking of getting the M5s, primarily as a transport for my desktop and also as a lighter DAP to take out once in a while.
Does the M5s play DSD files to an external DAC without any issues and gapless? My current transport DAP does not do this natively.
Can I send music from the M5s via Airplay to a receiver?
Thanks

Compatibility of M5s can differ little bit from DAC to DAC, if you cant ell us what DAC you want to use, we might be able to tell you more. Key is for the DAC to be self powered, not relying on power from USB port.
M5s can serve only as Airplay receiver, it can not send music over Airplay to other Airplay receiver.
