What are some portable, non-IEM, full-sized cans that synergize well with this player when put directly through its 3.5mm headphone jack? Is the B&O H6 any good? Any other suggestions? I also want my future pair to be easily drivable, without an amp.

Meze 99 classics, Oppo pm3 or pm2

these above imo are better than the H6

Is the Meze 99 Neo a downright downgrade from the Classics? The Neos are within my budget...

If i can use one word if i may then yes,
The neo although a well made and very capable headphone didnt have the same sense of scale or completeness as the classics.
if you can stretch to a used pair or maybe a new pair ex demo that would be great.

The classics are a classic headphone most would agree.

The M9 screen was good it wasnt night and day difference to the M5s, and the difference in sound is quite substantial in favour of the M5s, it is deeper and richer with more midrange the detail is excellent, the M9 had good detail but lacked the richness.

I used EQ on both players and the M5s is just much better. If i could take the gold 3.5mm and 2.5mm (4.4mm ideal world) terminals off the M9 onto the M5s thats how the M9 is better.

Agreed. The M9 is more comparable to M3s, being they have the same DAC spec. M5s in terms of driving power is blowing me away. It pushes the 6xx nicely. Lots of note weight and they just pair really well

Time to make a suggestions list!
Nothing crazy, but practical changes.
Copy, add, paste, reply and keep it going.

1. Volume level where EQ is on top left of screen like M0
2. Full Album covers would be nice instead of black border
3. Screenshot ability?
4. EQ - Ability to adjust each bar separately, i find it easy to accidentally change a frequency
5. Smoother scrolling, it's snappy as it is, but IMO too snappy and easy to lose your place

1. Will tell them to change this. No idea why it works fine on M0, but they changed it for M5s.
2. size of album art is chosen to keep other elements clear. If we make album art bigger, it will end up masking over buttons/text.
3. Not something we would expect anybody would want from portable player?
4. To be clear, you have problem that while sliding one bar, your finger is so wide it slides another bar at the same time?
5. Always trying to improve this small parts of UI.

It would be nice to be able to shuffle songs from a particular artist (without having to create a playlist).

Also it would be good to be able to name a playlist.

... unless you can do these already but I’ve missed the functionality?!?

Noted the artist shuffle.
With playlists name, no way to change it at current time.

Now, the screen...It could be a lot better; I could literally see the pixels in my screen. A higher resolution screen would no doubt showcase album art more competently.

Screen is always question of availability and pricing. And for dedicated music players, we believe little bit lower quality screen is better than increasing price or cutting down on other part of the player.

Thx for the acknowledgment,

Makes sense on the album art.
Screenshot ability allows us to share with eachother. You can be the first!
In the EQ section its easy to accidentally change a bar when you swipe left or right fat fingers or not.

Guys, I’m at my wit’s end. So I have 2.0 installed and am navigating the Artists menu. When selecting an artist, how do you play all of the songs by that artist? It gives you the option to play every song in 1 album but not ALL of the songs by an artist! What the heck? What am I missing?

Also, how in the world do you view the complete information of a particular song? I want to see the bit rate for example.

@Shanling

Some tips for better in-player playlist management.

- Songs in a playlist should be sorted alphabetically, so a particular song you want to listen to can be found more easily.

- There should be a notification notifying you that an already added song is already present in a playlist. Currently there is none.

Take notes from the M0. Playlist management is better implemented there. :smile_phones:

EDIT: The way the player handles Favorites is more to my liking. Is there a song limit for that?

Will try to adjust the space for sliding.

Yeah, currently no way how to play all songs of one artist. Our mistake.

Actually alphabetical sorting of playlists on M0 is viewed as error. Playlist, from its nature, should follow the way how you want to play the files, so in particular order you chose. Alphabetical order goes against it.

Don't remember exact limit for playlists, should be few hundred files, including "Favorites".

Thanks for the reply.

Is there a way to make Favorites via a firmware update unlimited in the amount of songs it can contain or will it strain the player too much?

When somebody will manage to hit the limit, we will think about it.

Right now, the Cayin N3 is on sale for around the same price as the Shanling M0. As an owner of an N3, I can attest it’s a great DAP for the price, but it doesn’t do Bluetooth as well as the M0.
Well that's nice but not really relevant to a discussion of M5s.

Thank you Guys for your feedback. It certainly pushes me in the direction that perhaps the M5s is worth the money. I really think though that the firmware has to be finished before this price is justified.

What I'm now wondering, given the specs and the feedback, is how closely the M5s compares to a desktop rig? How close does it get to an RME ADI2-DAC or an iFi iDAC2+iCAN combo? Could I slip one of these in my trouser pocket in the morning and not take the phones off until bedtime and not miss those other rigs? It would be nice not to be tied to a listening chair. It would be nice not to have to pause the music and take the phones off every time I need to get up to cook dinner or do a chore or go to the little room. I'm not prepared to pay silly A&K style prices for this as, so far, those players (not just A&K) do not deliver on their promise. They are not good enough for their high prices. Does M5s break the mould?
