I think it has to co-relate to the serial.
As I don't think it's logical to have a high serial number and a older box version.

What I gather so far


Serial No 0321008XXX is having PK_1.3_ (fake, china web). Serial to high for a older packaging.
Serial No 0052000XXX is going at PK_1.4. (head fi's imperialX)


So do the serial and box number you guys have correlate ?

If you can get the 2 yrs warranty for a pair of new IE80, then it should be safe. Honestly I wouldn't spend $300+ on something without warranty. My EX600 was an example. I regret buying it from eBay but fortunately Sony's service center honored the warranty when problems struck twice. Without that even pathetically short 3 month warranty, I would have pretty much wasted the money spent and let alone having a free upgrade from the EX600 to EX1000.
 
This is not something like my ipods which I can replace this and that myself.

the IE80 sounds awesome with the Silver Galaxy cable.

the sound really opened up after about 50 hrs burn-in with the cable.

-just loving trance music with this combo and my iPhone 4!!

Hmm i'm really thinking about buying a used pair of IE8 just to see how it sounds when paired with the Silver Galaxy cable...

Wide soundstage is beast.

No problem man and glad you can "hear the difference". Honestly the silver cable had a bigger effect on the IE8 for some reason. They were sibilant for a few days and then they really settled down and everything improved. Still too much mid bass to be honest. But what was nice about them was you EQ down the mid bass and bass, max the bass knob and you have a super big sound stage and more detail with tons of reverberation. The presentation was larger than even the IE80. But for me it was just a little too big. I like the vocals to be a bit more intimate and the IE80 managed to capture that.

Sorry if I've made some misunderstandings.

I'm just referring to the PK_1.X ( other number might be dates,not specifically in any order as I don't have any reference for it.)
