I bought a pair a couple of months ago and at first I was really disappointed and wanted to return them (blasphemy!) but after hundreds of hours of burn-in my opinion of them changed completely: they sound great! I still can't get any of the standard tips to fit my ears very well, but until I find a shop that sells Olive Shures here in Sweden they'll have to do.

I searched on the forums and found out that some people use them while sleeping, and I was wondering if there's any chance of them breaking if I fall asleep on them? This morning I woke up with my head on them and I'm terrified that they'll break.

My other question is, how do they handle cold? Right now it's -10 C outside and I don't use a hat most of the time, but can the cold damage the drivers or cable in any way? I don't expect the temperature to drop below -20C this winter, so can they handle that?

Hi Kristjan,

The IE 8 are high quality and robust earphones designed for professional stage use. Do rest assure that the housings will not break even when you sleep with them. The audio function will still work normally in cold temperatures of between -10 C to -20 C as your ears will warm them up. However, the cables may get stiffer hence we suggest not to bend them when you're outdoors in the cold.

I, too, have been afraid to wear them to sleep although other Head-Fi members use them for that.

This is one of the reasons Head-Fi is great...thanks for responding Rosmadi!

I have IE8 after trying many other in ears and I think these are the best I have used. They are very expensive but I got them from a good friend of mine. What you neeed to do is run them in like hifi speakers it takes about 12 hours of use time before they get to there best. The sennheiser ie8 are great, not sure what could beat them.

I fall asleep with mine all the time, and for two years they have survived. Also while shopping they fell form my pocket and trailed the floor and got caught up the trolley wheel, but were somehow fine! If you wear them over yor ears they kind of create a flat surface across the ear opening, so you can lay with your ear pressed against he pillow. If you wear them outside the cable can get quite unruly and stiff, which can dislodge them from your ears if you tilt your head.

I heard that they are coming out with the IE9 and it's supposed to use dual dynamic drivers. This is what I found online:

"Fair at the next CES (technology fair held every year in January, in this 2011, from 6 to 9)
somehow, there has been certain filtration products they will present some of the firms who will attend to it, including Sennheiser.

As far as we could be interesting, it has confirmed the presence of a new in-ear high-end brand, the Sennheiser IE9

Apparently, these are the features:

Frequency response: 10 to 24000 Hz
Impedance: 16 Ohms
Sensitivity: 127 db
Attenuation: 26 db (95%)
Connector: 3.5 mm
System: dynamic dual driver

This, unfortunately, has not transcended is not the time to market (although it notes next) or the price they have on the market, even if it is known that Sennheiser, in an excellent twist to its business strategy to the rest of its competitors, has made a product which, according to the kindness expressed by its developers, will offer improved an estimated 15% increase in quality of sound referring to his fellow IE8, with a profile only eased a little in low frequency of recent and extremely aggressive pricing policy that might cheapen the product by 40% over the previous model.

It also seems to be more comfortable, smaller than IE8, and a detail, always appreciated, is that some of the caps that, among some others, completing the pack will come standard with the headphones, set of three pairs , will be a model "owner" Sennheiser practically equal to the famous "olive" Shure something more comfortable and ergonomic than those.

Mine Survived being launched across the room while attached to my ears still after some how snagging too my handbag, First thing i do when i walk in through the door is throw my handbag across the room onto the chair when get home from work, They pulled right off my ears (ouch) and disconnected from my Amp, They are fine, I wouldn't worry about sleeping with them in, I would be more worried about the discomfort if they was to fall out of your ears and dig in your neck or side of your face.

Could someone describe the highs on the IE8 for me? It seems like a good rock/pop IEM, but I just don't know if I can take hidden highs a la SM3.

Don't worry about highs. Thats actually one of the IE8's highlights. Some may consider the mids veiled but they are clearly there, just a more gentle presentation. Everything fills in with burn in. Give them 250 hours of burn in before judging them. And if you want even more improvement consider a silver cable upgrade (watch out for silver plated those aren't better than actual silver cable).
