Starting to think about trying a chinese offering see if they suit me more, maybe timeless ortho or moondrop, whatever is the cheapest model that can perform on a similar technical level to the ie 300.
I tried putting tips on the outer notch, dropped down to small tips for deeper insertion and HOLY CRAP it is night and day.
Finally the entire lower half of the frequency range has come to life, I was not remotely close to a proper seal with any tip size when they were flush to the shell ... Definitely fairly sensitive to seal and insertion depth.
also as rwelles suggested, a stopper is needed because tips do slip very easily back onto the inner notch, especially when they warm up and get squishy... happened 3 times already.
Really just astonishing sound quality now, an order of magnitude more dynamic sounding than the HD650 or HD800, which are really strong players in the over-ear world, absolutely monstrously resolving treble that is smooth as butter at the same time. Doesn't have the imaging, staging or tonal realism of them but it been a couple hours and I feel like it's going to be very very difficult to get much enjoyment listening to the HD800 or even hd650 ever again due to their comparative lack of upper end smoothness (tinnitus and ear sensitivity at the moment is making that a very high priority ) and also them failing to compete with extreme level of musical engagement the ie 300 is providing.
I am not even using a good source yet, only my phone.
