Sennheiser HD820

I wanted a TOTL Sennheiser headphone in my collection. The HD800S's were it until the HD820's were announced. I sold my HD800S's knowing I would replace them with the HD820's one day. That day has come....

Really look forward to your review on HD820. Initially, I thought HD800s was a little lacking but now I got used to it.

I don’t think they are lacking, they are just missing some sub bass. I was able to add that with the Pro iCan and it made all the difference in the world to my ears. They became fuller sounding and sounded like the headphone they should’ve been. I did get them to bottom out/distort with too much added bass. It’s the same scenario that happened with my Utopia’s when I went to the second bass setting on the Pro iCan. Truthfully, the first bass setting on the Pro iCan fills in the sub bass regions on any headphone. It’s really well done. Based on what I’ve read so far about the HD820’s I’ll be using it with them as well. That’s if the bass is not to my liking initially.

How are vocals? For reference, I thought that vocals on the HD800S were lifeless, soulless, thin and weak. Also, are these just another variation of the dry and analytical HD8** sound or have they taken different qualities?

I was somewhat disappointed in the beginning due to lack of bass impact with HD800s comparing to Z1R but now I prefer HD800s over Z1R as it produces more realistic sounds. HD800s provides more balanced tonality.

I would agree with you. The Z1R’s are not the most accurate sounding headphones. The almost seem colored in comparison. The HD800 series of headphones are definitely more tonally accurate. They have pinpoint imaging as well. It’s good to have both in your stable. Use the HD800/HD800S’s when you want to do some critical listening. Use the Z1R’s when you just wanted to sit back, relax and just enjoy the music. The Z1R’s are smooth in their delivery.

all Sony product are crap, from their phones to their TV and headset...I rather own a pair of Beats than buying any Sony headphone. At least I know I spent 300 bucks rather than 1500 on a bloated bass headset.

That said, HD820 is not for everyone, the shape of your head does play a part in the sound. I'm blessed with a fat head I guess...The only thinng that will replace these HD820 is a pair of Meze Empyrean.

But Sony offers you the chance of being the proud owner of a 2K pair of Beats ...

By the way, why is this thread so dead? Did the HD820 flop? Before it was released the pages were rolling through. Typically you have at least a few listeners active even years after release.

It's a $2400 headphone that has been highly criticized for the frequency response charts and reports of difficult fit so initial hype has dropped quickly. Lastly, the closed back headphone market is far more consumer than audiophile so some of the self proclaimed audiophiles won't try at all.

Sell it to me. Why is it not the dry sound with dead vocals I heard from the HD800S? Why have you not listed it under portable in your signature but have the Utopia there of all things?
